Over the past 10 years, FAMU Athletics has accrued a deficit of nearly $8 million at an average spend rate of $800,000 per year over budget. We are happy to report for the first time in more than a decade, the Department of Athletics projects a balanced budget for fiscal year 2017.
FAMU Athletics has decreased expenses, increased revenues and overall department productivity through marked progress on the athletics strategic plan initiatives. For fiscal year 2017, operating expenses totaled $8.5 million, representing a decrease of $1.2 million or 12% compared to the 2016 fiscal year expenses of $10.4 million. Changes of note include combining sports teams to reduce travel expenses, reduction in salaries, reduction in contracted services and recommission of the athletics owned bus. Athletics projects a combined two-year expense reduction rate of 27% or $1.4 million. FAMU Athletics began to reduce its net position deficit by $200,000 with the implementation of the repayment plan through the FAMU Foundation.
This fiscal year, non E&G Athletics revenues increased to $8.6 million (16.2%) or $1.2 million from the $7.4 million earned in FY 2016. Changes of note include a $640,000 or (49%) increase in football and Olympic sport game guarantees, a 300% increase in fundraising ($1M), and an increase in NCAA revenues, football ticket sales and other auxiliary revenue. Fiscal year 2018 athletics revenues are projected to increase by 17% to $9.7 million largely due to an increase in men’s and women’s basketball game guarantees, increased revenue from other Olympic sports, increased football revenue from a new FAMU owned classic football game in Tampa and increased philanthropic fundraising. The Fiscal year 2016-2019 combined fiscal growth rate is projected at 27% or $2.6 million. (See graphic representation)
