The Korean-born Australian violinist Dr. Ji Hyun Kim’s wide-ranging career has encompassed work as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, and educator. As an acclaimed soloist and chamber musician, Kim has made numerous media appearances worldwide and performed in major cities of South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, Luxembourg, Austria, and the United States. The outstanding musicality and stage presence of Kim’s playing have been recognized through her success in both national and international competitions hosted by the Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Foundation, Yamaha Music Society, Chamber Music New Zealand, and International Grieg Society.

Kim also holds an extensive experience serving as concertmaster and principal violinist of various ensembles and orchestras including the Sydney Sinfonia, Ad Libitum, Musique 21, Vianden Summer Music Festival orchestra, Society of International Music Artist Orchestra, and the Lansing Symphony and Jackson Symphony Orchestras.

As a dedicated educator with great interest in cultivating more positive and intimate performer-audience relationship, Kim has presented instrumental demonstrations, guest lectures, and master classes to various audiences ranging from pre-school children to college-level students and adults. She regularly visits Michigan schools and youth orchestras as a clinician and orchestra coach. As an Artist-Teacher in Residence of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra Community Music School, Kim has designed and developed its satellite elementary school string program curriculum. And for several summers, Kim has taught as the head string faculty at the Michigan American String Teachers Association Summer Camp.

Kim received a Bachelor of Music Performance from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Australia, where she studied under Christopher Kimber. She completed her Master and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees under Dr. Walter Verdehr at Michigan State University, with cognate studies in Viola Performance, Music Therapy, and Contemporary Art Music.

She has served on the adjudicating panels for various festivals, competitions, and auditions such as the MSBOA Solo & Ensemble Festival, ENKOR International Competition, Central Michigan University’s Concerto Competition, Michigan ArtWorks Competition, and the Jackson Symphony and Lansing Symphony Orchestras’ annual auditions, and the LSO Young Artist Competition.

Kim is an Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola and Director of String Orchestra at Spring Arbor University. She is also the Founder and Artistic Director of ConTempus Initiative, Michigan-based contemporary music collective, committed to making new music accessible to everyone by creating collaborative performances that connect with today’s audiences.
