Year in Review 2017 Highlights from the University of Rochester School of Nursing

The University of Rochester School of Nursing is proud to have pioneered the Unification Model, integrating clinical practice, education, and research. As 2017 ends, here are some of the year's highlights of each of these core areas.

Clinical & Outreach Accomplishments

Center for Employee Wellness

The Center for Employee Wellness (CEW) had a banner year, extending services to more than 5,000 newly eligible individuals. The CEW now serves a total of 32,000 lives across 7 counties in New York, and has conducted wellness clinics in Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

The CEW's offerings include:

  • Biometric screenings with real-time results
  • Online personal health assessments
  • One-on-one condition management programs
  • Lifestyle management programs for weight loss, stress reduction, blood pressure and cholesterol management, increasing activity, smoking cessation, and building a healthier lifestyle

The thousands of individuals engaged in these programs experienced remarkable results that can have a long-lasting positive impact on overall health and wellness.

The CEW is looking forward to continued growth in the new year. Click "Learn more" to read about its upcoming work with Ontario County employees.

School-Based Health Centers

Health disparities mirror gaps in educational achievement. But research on school-based health centers shows that they can not only improve health outcomes by reducing emergency visits and hospitalizations, but they may also lead to better attendance and academic outcomes.

Staffed and supported by nurse practitioners from the School of Nursing, East High's school-based health center provided comprehensive health services to over 1,100 high school students at no cost. Of the more than 3,100 visits, 34 percent were for mental health treatment.

Passport Health

The Passport Health clinic at the School of Nursing serves the Rochester community by offering vaccinations for travelers—including yellow fever, typhoid, malaria, and meningitis—as well as other immunizations such as shingles, HPV, flu, and hepatitis A and B.

This year, Passport Health received both national and international recognition for its clinical accomplishments.

As the United States faces a shortage of yellow fever immunizations, Passport Health was selected as one of a limited number of sites to administer the vaccine.

"The fact that our clinic was chosen speaks highly of the effort and care in which we’ve delivered these critical services to our community for more than 20 years.”

— Matthew Klapetzky, MS, RN-BC, clinical director of Passport Health

In April, Passport Health received the President’s Club Award. The international honor is given out annually to a clinic that demonstrated exemplary operational and business metric milestones.

Project ECHO®

Directed out of the School of Nursing, the Western New York Comprehensive Care Center for Eating Disorders launched the world's first Project ECHO® tele-education hub specializing in the treatment of eating disorders.

Mary Tantillo, PhD, PMHCNS-BC, FAED, CGP is a professor of clinical nursing and director of the Western New York Comprehensive Care Center for Eating Disorders. She discussed the Project ECHO® initiative on Second Opinion, a nationally syndicated television program.

Educational Mission

Finger Lakes Regional Scholarship Expansion

Amid a rising demand for nurses nationwide, the Finger Lakes region is experiencing an acute need for health care providers.

As part of the School of Nursing's ongoing commitment to addressing health care disparities throughout New York State, the school announced an expansion of its Finger Lakes Regional Scholarship.

“We take our role as a community partner very seriously.”

— Dean Kathy Rideout, EdD, PPCNP-BC, FNAP

The scholarship’s eligibility area has expanded to include 18 counties in and around the Finger Lakes region.

Infusing the region with graduates from these programs will address specific community needs, directly fill gaps in care, and help patients to achieve better health outcomes.

School of Nursing Receives National Diversity Award

The School of Nursing was one of only eight nursing schools in the country to receive the Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award (HEED). It is the only national honor recognizing U.S. medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, osteopathic, and allied health schools that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“Being honored with a HEED Award is a tremendous recognition of our commitment to building an inclusive community that hears and respects all voices.”

— Dean Kathy Rideout, EdD, PPCNP-BC, FNAP

Dean Rideout and two alumni of the Accelerated Bachelor's Program for Non-Nurses were featured on WHAM's Many Voices, Many Visions to discuss diversity at the School of Nursing.

US News & World Report Rankings

The School of Nursing is consistently recognized as a leader in nursing education. In 2017, the school ranked #36 nationally for its master's programs and #38 for doctoral programs

As the top-ranked program in Upstate New York, the School of Nursing is one of only three institutions in the state—and the only one outside of New York City—ranked in the top 50 for both master’s and doctoral programs.

Advancing Research

National Institutes of Health Research Funding

With dozens of active research projects, research at the School of Nursing has garnered national attention and support.

“Advancing research and scientific discovery is a core mission of the school."

- Associate Dean for Research Kim Arcoleo, PhD, MPH

For the third consecutive year, the School of Nursing improved its ranking for National Institutes of Health funding, jumping six spots to No. 19 in the nation.
