Gardening Club Grant
The NPS Gardening Club was excited to be awarded a Woolworths Junior Landcare Garden Grant for $1000. Alongside this, we received $500 to create a bee-friendly garden. The gardening club is a popular playtime activity with students participating in all aspects of garden care. Gardening is a beneficial activity which supports the well-being of students.
With the grant from Woolworths we will be extending and improving our current vegetable garden areas, allowing for a greater variety of produce to be grown. Our bee garden will include native flowers and plants that attract and support bees in our area. We will be hanging pollination houses and providing a bee-friendly water supply. On Monday Kristy Hodges and Christina Brooks from Woolworths Narrabri attended our school assembly to announce that we were a successful recipient of the grant.
Science Challenge
On Tuesday 8th June, 32 year 6 students competed in the North West Science and Engineering Challenge Discovery Day. The student’s hard work was rewarded with a second place and they found it enriching to challenge their brains.
The Discovery Days aim to challenge Year 6 students to consider a career in Science or Engineering. Students participated in activities which had them creating bridges, chairs, mini-catapults, earthquake-proof towers and bionic hands. Students were also presented with scenarios where they had to avoid power outages in cities, plan efficient transport networks and create and send secret codes.
All students worked well as a team using problem-solving, trial and error and experimentation to solve the problems they were faced with. A highlight of the day was watching the student’s bridges being tested. One NPS bridge was extremely well built surviving the heaviest testing weight, called the ‘bridge buster’, without even a scratch.
Halle Emmerson – Last Tuesday was so much fun! We got to be a part of the Science and Engineering Challenge Day. Every group did two activities and we enjoyed them all. For me, the best part of the day was being able to have a go at new things and being a part of a team to complete our challenges. Our school came second which is awesome!
Jad Harris - Silver Group Activity 1: The group I was in did light communications it was confusing at first, but after we did some practice runs, we got the hang of it. The objective was to get a message to half of the group on the other side by using 7 colours that they would receive through a transparent pipe and write it down. Our team smashed the others and won because we had the fastest time and the most points 340, it was very enjoyable and I’d say our whole team had a fun time.
Larissa Clark - I really enjoyed the Science and Engineering Challenge Day because it was really fun. We got to do challenges, work together and meet new people.
Annalyse Hobson – When I went to the Science and Engineering Challenge Day it was the best thing I have done. It was exciting when my group created the bridge and we came first. The bridge survived Big Chungus and even the Bridge Buster which was the heaviest of them all.
Lily Thompson – We went to an awesome event called the Science and Engineering Challenge Day. We had a group of four people and had two experiments that we needed to do as a team. First we had to build a bridge out of straws, paper, paddle pop sticks, cardboard and tape. It was challenging but we worked as a team and we got our bridge survived 9.5kg WOW! For our second experiment we had to use signals with lights and crack the code. We made different lights and how many times we pressed the lights sent a message through to the other side. The day was so fun and our school ended up coming second!
Edie Rapley – I think my group worked well together. For Get a Grip we had to make a hand; we were confused at first but ended up making one of the best looking and working hands!
Caleb -Loder – We created a secret code with red, green and blue lights. It was by far my favourite activity all day.
Nevaeya Dennis - I really liked going there and my favourite part was making a chair. Our chair was well made and it didn’t break when weights were sat or dropped on it.
Emily Miskle - My Group made a catapult we constructed it out of chop sticks, tape and rubber bands. I really enjoyed it because we got to try and shoot into a hoop, that time we did win!!!!
Hope Stanford – We did the challenge Build a chair. We had to make a chair that could withstand different weights and it was fun. We won; it was AMAZING!!

The library has been a warm and welcome place to be in the last week when we had our freezing weather! Students have been able to come in and have a warm and cosy place to read, or play some games with friends.
Our SRC bought a karaoke machine to send our Friday Fun-Day Karaoke to the next level. After setting it up and practicing before it’s grand unveiling, as is often the way, we unfortunately had some technical difficulties on the day. Students were patient and resilient and for that we are going to have a bonus day this week. Students are invited to come for karaoke on Wednesday AND Friday at Play 2!

Paper Newsletter opt in
As per our previous correspondence, our media team has been working hard to create a dynamic digital newsletter to reflect the many and varied goings-on at Narrabri Public School.
Our digital newsletter goes far beyond our paper-based one, as we are trying to reduce our paper usage in line with our sustainable practice targets. On our digital newsletter you can find further detail about events, a range of photos and links to videos. Our digital newsletter can be found through our Facebook page, on our website and on our school app.
As we are progressing on this journey we have found less and less families are engaging in the paper-based newsletter, though we recognise that some families would like to continue receiving one each Monday. If you would like to continue receiving a paper-based newsletter each Monday, please complete the attached slip in this weeks paper newsletter and return it to the Front Office, or call on 02) 6792 2246 to request a copy of the paper-based newsletter be sent home with your child.
Abundance Of Olives
Some of our Stage 1 students have been learning the art of curing olives. Our olive tree has been plentiful this year and we are trying several curing recipes. The process is lengthy and the students have been working through the steps to cure the olives ready for tasting. They were excited when Mrs Pawley (an olive lover) gave them the ‘thumbs up’ on their final product.
The steps include:
- Crush the olives to remove the pip. Then place the olives into cold water with slices of lemon.
- Leave them to soak 24 hours and then drain the olives and place in a shallow dish. Sprinkle with rock salt and leave for 24 hours.
- Sprinkle with enough vinegar to cover and stand for another 24 hours.
- Drain the olives and put into a bowl, add olive oil and herbs of your choice. We have used oregano and garlic.
- Mix well and put into jars with olive oil and seal. The olives will mature in the oil and soften with time.
If you would like to try this process at home we have olives to spare!!!!!
Northwest Softball ⚾
Last week, on Monday and Tuesday, the North West Girls and Boys softball trials were held in Tamworth. Emily Miskle, Rya Knox and Bella Lettice demonstrated their talent for the game and were selected into the girls team.
Noah Allen and Frazer Penburthy also greatly impressed selectors with their batting and fielding skills. Congratulations to Noah for being selected into the side and Frazer being named as a North West reserve. Well done! We know that you will represent our region proudly.
Bravely Bouncing 🏀
The boys basketball team took on Tamworth today in the PSSA knockout gala day. They had an outstanding win in their first game with a score of 44-8. After a long nerve-wracking wait, the boys played their second game but unfortunately lost 35-10. Along the way the boys valued the importance of playing as a team! Well done, team!
