Forms is well known for it's ability to quickly and easilly gather informal data and assess student understanding. But did you know that Forms will allow you to build enrichment activities into an activity to help guide students forward when they are ready? And that it also allows you to build remediation into those same activities to help support students when they need the support?
Important: Google and Microsoft both have effective Forms apps. The function of the branching tools are very similar, regardless of the product.
1. Get your Form started
2. Build your questions -- section by section
Including questions for First and Last names can help you keep submissions organized. When creating an interactive Form, it is best to use the Multiple Choice option. Be sure to indicate which choice is considered best.
Before adding your second question, it is important to create a new SECTION. One question per section will increase your branching power!
3. Finish adding questions and sections
Continue to build your Form following the same pattern -- create a new section and add a single question. A branched Form is the perfect place to practice restraint in your assessment -- less is typically more in a branched Form.
It is very helpful to have all of your questions created before adding additional enrichment and/or remediation resources.
4. Add your enrichment and remediation resources
After you have completed created all of your questions it is time to connect those questions to the remediation and enrichment activities. Maybe you have instructional videos that can redirect some lost learning? Think about how simple Screencasting can allow you to create short and effective instructional videos. Add your instructional videos in their own sections as well. Just like you created 1 question per section, you want 1 enrichment or remediation resource per section.
The last section that you will want to create is a 'You're Finsihed' section.
5. Make your connections
It is important to be sure that you have your Form prepared and built before yoy begin branching and making those direct connections. But don't worry... you can always adjust, add and remove things from your Form while you are building it.
6. Check all of your connections
Your Form will work best if every answer choice has an indicated location to send your participants. The correct answer can move them forward in your Form (or send them to a specific piece of enrichment material) while incorrect answers can direct them to a piece of instruction. Once students complete (or watch) the remediation piece, be sure to send them back to the original question. Teaching is about multiple chances, right?!
After connecting all of your questions with specific resources, be sure to connect the last correct answer in your Form to your 'You're Finished' page. This will allow students to submit their work. Grading should be simple... you'll know that got every answer correct!
