CNN's Rachel Crane talks with astronauts Victor Glover and Shannon Walker. They'll be flying on NASA's Crew-1 mission, the next manned flight of SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft. The team is preparing for a historic step forward in the US space program: Their mission, dubbed Crew-1, will mark the first fully operational mission for a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. And it'll be the first of what NASA hopes will be many more to come, allowing the agency to make full use of the International Space Station and drastically increase the number of science experiments able to be carried out on the multibillion-dollar orbiting laboratory. Connecting the Dots gives us a shared language to move forward together.

Intersectionality: the overlap of various social identities, such as race, gender, sexuality, and class, which contribute to the specific type of systemic oppression and discrimination (or privilege) experienced by an individual (often used attributively).

Race: A mode of categorization that is base on physical appearance and to some degree ascribed - meaning that people are assigned the racial category based on what other people see. These categories are fluid and our ideas of regional groupings change all the time.

Ethnicity: The ethnic group or groups that a person belongs to. It is a part of a person's heritage and ancestry. Two people of the same racial group can still have very different ethnicity. Some groups are unable to trace their specific ethnic heritage because of things like slavery assimilation and genocide.

Nationality: A person's national origin, the country where they hold citizenship. People of the same race or ethnicity can come from all different nations. It is flexible; if a person immigrates, their nationality can change, and people can have dual citizenship or sometimes no citizenship.

Do you believe that your race correlates to your skin tone? Because that wasn’t always the case. So how did Americans come to believe that race equals certain visible physical characteristics such as skin color and hair? And why is it that certain ethnic groups that were once considered “non-white” became reclassified as “white”? Watch the episode to find out. PBS
