In Search of the Line RESEARCH TO PERFORMANCE

March to June 2021

‘In Search of the Line’ is a project involving lines, threads and ropes in combination with moving bodies:

“Each line answers or co-responds to every other. The result is not an assemblage but a roundel: not a collage of juxtaposed blobs but a wreath of entwined lines, a whirl of catching up and being caught.” Tim Ingold, The life of Lines

In a group of Artists with diverse approches and backgrounds - from Visual Arts to Time Based Arts and Multimedia Arts - we reflected upon lines and knots in relation to bodies and collective dynamics.

Still of our first meeting during the 24 Hours Residency at Kunsthuis SYB - with Abi Bedeova, Laura Fabricius, Alisa Rudzīte, Marieke van Loon, Aisha Hachem, Vera Muller, Morgan Ton

Inspired by commonly used braiding techniques in the rope industry and traditional dances around the world, we enlarged finger knitting to a human body scale. This research resulted in a performative installation where entangled bodies are constructing and deconstructing networks.

research around the body in space

The participants of this performance are marching forward together, leaving a chain behind them. Attached to one another, they find themselves in this cycle of constructing and deconstructing an organic installation:

“Braided, limbs and hearts and thoughts. Braided tight. Wet ropes, knotted in the breezes, then dried, bleached in the sand, the children advanced by the same step, small and large, to the rhythm of their mother, the first of the ropes. They felt the curvature of the earth under their bare feet. They saw the shape of their mother walking towards this ever more distant place where the horizon rounded slightly like a belly.” Carole Martinez, Le coeur cousu
Discovering the space and filming
