Dear University community,

Today, our campus and community are welcoming members of our Class of 2025 as they take part in our first Dusty Camp of the Summer. We’re excited to help them find a new home here at TAMIU and looking forward to helping them to Go Beyond.

  • Speaking of helping students, how about FREE books this Fall? I hope you’ve heard about our exciting pilot program, TAMIU Books IncludED that’s launching this Fall. Find out more.
  • COVID-19 Vaccinations are now available on campus every Wednesday and Thursday through our partnership with the National Guard. They are free of charge and open to the University and the public. Additional vaccination dates and more on free COVID-19 Testing are here. Please note that Curative vaccination dates will end with Tuesday’s vaccination event.
  • Our Graduate School has added new online programs and MBA concentrations You’ll want all the details.
  • What’s happening Thursday? Uconnect is reloading as a cloud-based, streamlined experience focused on easy access to TAMIU resources and systems.
  • This week we share news of the retirements of much-beloved members of our faculty and administration. Nursing faculty Dr. Rose Saldivar and Linda Flores are retiring. Joining them will be the University’s longest-serving employee, Mary T. Treviño, who has completed 51+ years of remarkable service to the University. We wish all happy trails as they begin their new chapters.
  • Regents and Piper Professor of History Dr. Jerry Thompson has done it again! He has been awarded the Distinguished Writing Award by the Army Historical Foundation!
  • Don’t forget…Applications for the next funding cycle for CRRSAA Grants for students enrolled during Sub-Term II, Summer Session II, and Summer Session III open the week of July 12. Here’s more.
  • Employees: Open Enrollment is July 1 - July 31 for all Benefits Eligible Employees and Retirees. It’s a great time to review, and revise if necessary, insurance and beneficiary information. Open Enrollment elections can be completed in Workday beginning July 1 by logging into Single Sign On, clicking on Workday, and completing the Open Enrollment item in your Workday Inbox.
  • Registration for Summer and Fall continues. Fall here will be a full and vibrant, on-campus experience. We can’t wait to welcome you back!

TAMIU Pilots Free Books For All Students This Fall

This Fall at TAMIU, degree-seeking students will be part of a pilot program providing all TAMIU required textbooks and course materials free of charge. TAMIU Books IncludED delivers course materials to students in multiple formats, including E-book (digital), open educational resources, and print.

TAMIU Resumes In-Person Dusty Camp Monday, Welcomes Incoming Class of 2025 Dustdevils

Incoming TAMIU freshman students will get to experience their first glimpse at campus life during TAMIU’s annual Dusty Camp, offered in-person and on-campus. Dusty Camp, or New Student Orientation, provides a unique experience helping incoming students transition from high school to University life. Throughout the two-day experience, students become familiarized with the campus.

TAMIU’S Incoming First-Year Students Encourages to Begin Summer Reading

Students are encouraged to take time this summer to complete their reading of this year’s Common Read, “Failing Up: A Professor’s Odyssey of Flunking, Determination, and Hope.” Written by TAMIU University College dean Dr. Barbara Hong, the Common Read tells the story of Hong’s journey toward attending an Ivy League university and becoming a renowned university professor.

Two Cherished TAMIU Nursing Faculty Members to Retire

TAMIU College of Nursing and Health Sciences faculty members Dr. Rose Saldivar, clinical assistant professor and coordinator of the Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing’s Family Nurse Practitioner program and Linda Flores, lead instructor will retire this summer. Together, they accumulated a combined 90 years of service and teaching.

Dr. Saldivar joined the Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing in 2000. She is both a certified Family Nurse Practitioner and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She has taught in both graduate and undergraduate nursing programs. Most recently, she coordinated the continued participation of FNP students in multiple City and TAMIU COVID- 19 vaccination drives. She was named this year’s recipient of the prestigious DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award for her leadership in empowering nurses.

Prior to joining TAMIU in 2006, she served in various capacities at the former Mercy Regional Medical Center and United Independent School District. In addition to her TAMIU service as a lead instructor on topics as varied as Health Assessment, Nutrition and Child Health, Flores has also served as TAMIU’s RN to BSN coordinator.

Uconnect Fully Transitions by July 1, 2021

Uconnect, our official communications portal, is transitioning. We’re going to “reload” Uconnect as a cloud-based, streamlined experience focused on easy access to TAMIU resources and systems. We’ll complete this transition by July 1, 2021. Rest assured that throughout our transition period and beyond, all student, faculty and staff services will remain in-place, and will not be disrupted.
