Goddesses and Good Fortune Lisa Garner

Lisa Garner

What’s my chosen medium for sculpting contemporary expressions of ancient archetypes? Polymer clay!

I love its willingness to be blended into custom colors, to accept inclusions and surface textures, and to be both modelled and carved.

The patterns you see are slices of polymer clay millefiori applied to polymer clay forms supported by internal metal armatures. Cured polymer clay is waterproof and durable. The sanded and buffed surfaces provide both visual and tactile delight.

Archaeology and mythology provide endless inspirations for my sculptures of multi-tasking women, aka goddesses. Although I envision them as monumental public statues, my one-of-a-kind tabletop sculptures are modern artifacts created to reflect the beauty, power and mystery in our daily lives.

My love affair with three-dimensional art began in childhood with play-dough. Sculpture adventures in stone, bronze and steel were mostly self-taught throughout my formal education in printmaking and my professional work in graphic design, sign-making and small business ownership. I am now delighted to be a full-time sculpture artist in my chosen medium of polymer clay.

I refer to all of my female figures as “goddesses” in homage to ancestral and present-day multi-tasking women. Mythology and archaeology offer endless sources of inspiration.

My goddess sculptures are meant to be daily companions, reminding us to enjoy the beauty, power and mystery in our lives. These small freestanding goddess statues are ideal for personal spaces, although I often imagine them as monumental public works.
