What does belonging mean to the Loyola University Maryland community? To Loyola, the sense of belonging on campus means everything. Loyola has recognized the importance of belonging and how people can make a positive impact on other community members.
In 2018-2019, Loyola conducted a Climate Survey with Dr. Susan Rankin & Associates to see if members of the community experienced a positive or negative campus climate. Although the results showed that many experienced a positive community, other students said that they considered transferring from Loyola. The number one reason was a lack of sense of belonging.
This survey also showed that some people experienced a hostile environment towards them due to their identity. The campaign is to show those who had negative experiences within the campus community, that their voice is heard and that they are valued members of the Loyola community.
"acknowledge the complexity of belonging and to emphasize the idea that it is everyone’s responsibility"
For some people, a sense of belonging can be instant; however, for some it might take some time for someone to feel like they belong, especially at college. Here is what some students had to say about the new Belonging Campaign at Loyola:
"Yes I do feel like I belong at Loyola. It took some time, but I am ultimately so happy at Loyola. I think the campaign is going well, but I wish there was more student/ teacher involvement"
"Yes I Feel like I belong at Loyola, because it has become my home away from home and a safe place where I feel comfortable. I think it is good that Loyola is doing this because not everyone on campus feel involved or integrated into the Loyola community"
