“I found that people all over the world where I’ve been are the same. You’ll find good people, bad people, hard workers, and lazy people. You’ll find that there’s such a variety wherever you go. I love the people and country here.”

Mary is an immigrant from Scotland. Her home country was dark because the sun didn’t come out often. Mary had a lot of family members in Scotland, but she made many friends who lived in the United States when she got here. Mary decided to immigrate to New York and she was excited to see the sun more often. She wanted a better life and more opportunities for herself.

Mary said “the idea of America sounded amazing” which helped her make her decision to immigrate an easy one. Mary was a teenager when she made the decision to leave Scotland. She jumped on the next plane and arrived to a brand new culture. Mary was very excited to be in the United States when she first arrived and was able to find a job quickly.

Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, and is north of England.

Mary did face some obstacles in her journey of immigration. One obstacle Mary faced was her job as a nanny. One of the kids she looked after misbehaved a lot, which was difficult for Mary. She was making money at her job, though, and needed to keep earning money. Eventually, Mary was able to get a new job. She went to college with her friends and was part of a support group with women from Scotland. This helped Mary make friends and gave her an opportunity to talk about her immigration experience.

The climate of Scotland and the United States are similar and different. They are similar because they both receive precipitation each month. They also both have the same temperature in the winter months. They are different because Scotland, throughout the year, has a small range in temperature but the United States has a large range in temperature. The United States has four seasons but Scotland has one season. Both country´s get warmer in the summer months and colder in the winter months. The United States gets warmer overall. It would be tough to transition from Scotland to the United States because it would take some time to get used to the warmer weather.

Mary misses her family back home in Scotland. To overcome this obstacle, Mary calls her family a lot. Mary is a proud American citizen with a good education and a kind heart.
