STORYLINES
A Milestone Victory — Texas’ 37-14 win over USC on Saturday night marked the Longhorns’ 900th win all-time. They joined Michigan and Ohio State as the only programs in FBS history to reach that milestone. It was particularly fitting for the Longhorns, whose 800th victory also came against USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl.
A Record Crowd — A school-record crowd of 103,507 watched Texas run away from USC inside Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.
Wheeler’s Got Wheels — Senior LB Anthony Wheeler scored his second career touchdown in Saturday night’s win over USC. In the third quarter, Caden Sterns blocked a USC field goal, and Wheeler scooped it up and went 46 yards for the score. Wheeler’s first career TD came in the 2017 Texas Bowl, a 37-yard fumble recovery that he returned to the end zone.
Stopping The Run — Texas’ rush defense has been stout under Todd Orlando. After ranking eighth nationally in 2017 (106.8 ypg), UT ranks 29th currently, allowing just 109.0 ypg. The Longhorns held USC to minus-5 rushing yards in Saturday’s victory. That came on 16 attempts (-0.3 ypc).
Herman's second year at the helm
A Texas Ex and former University of Texas graduate assistant with deep ties to the state of Texas, Tom Herman was named the 30th Head Football Coach at The University of Texas on Nov. 26, 2016. He enters his second season at UT in 2018 and his fourth season overall as a head coach.
In his first season at Texas, Herman guided the Longhorns to a 7-6 record and a victory in the Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl over Missouri. Both punter Michael Dickson and safety DeShon Elliott were named unanimous All-Americans, with Dickson becoming UT’s first-ever winner of the Ray Guy Award.
Herman came to Texas after compiling a 22-4 record in two seasons at Houston, the fourth-best record in the FBS in that span. His second season as head coach at Texas will mark his 15th spent in the state of Texas out of 21 years coaching on the collegiate level. That includes his time as a graduate assistant at UT (1999-2000), where he earned a master’s degree in education.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Gary Johnson
LB | 6-0 | 230 — Senior linebacker Gary Johnson totaled six tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry in the win over USC. The Longhorns held the Trojans to minus-5 rushing yards on 16 carries, behind Johnson’s four TFLs, the most for a Longhorn since 2014.
