How Port Moody-Coquitlam was won With new mapping data, The Tri-City News takes a look at the closest race in the 2019 federal election

It was the closest race in the 2019 federal election, coming down to just 153 votes.

But after all the ballots were counted, Nelly Shin managed to wrestle Port Moody-Coquitlam into the Conservative column, taking a riding that had previously been held by the NDP. With newly released poll mapping data, The Tri-City News takes a look at where the Tory candidate managed to garner her support.

This map shows the candidate with the most votes at each polling station in Port Moody-Coquitlam.

In the 2019 campaign, Port Moody-Coquitlam was a three-way race between Conservative Nelly Shin (16,855 votes), the NDP's Bonita Zarrillo (16,702 votes) and Liberal Sara Badiei (15,695 votes).

For the most part, the results were fairly typical for the riding, with the Tories doing well in the northern polls…

…while the NDP’s support was strongest in the south, particularly in Burquitlam and Maillardville…

…and the Liberals had their best results in the middle of the riding, in the Moody Centre area.

But the NDP was unable to hang on to the same level of support in southwest Coquitlam in the 2019 campaign as it did in the previous election in 2015, when NDP candidate Fin Donnelly took the riding.

Shin was able to lead in parts of the southern portion of the riding, with some polls in the Austin Heights, Maillardville and Harbourview switching from orange to blue in the 2019 race.
