Music Intent
At Woodsetts Primary School the intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. Our objective is to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music and an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.
At Woodsetts Primary School, in conjunction with the aims of the National Curriculum, our music teaching offers opportunities for children to:
- Play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression
- Improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the inter-related dimensions of music
- Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory
- Use and understand staff and other musical notations
- Appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians
- Develop an understanding of the history of music.
Implementation
We use the Charanga music scheme to help us sequence our music curriculum. This ensures pupils are given the opportunity to use the correct language and terminology associated with music as well as listening to a wide range of composers and musical genres.
Music is taught each week in a discrete lesson. There are then opportunities to listen to and explore music across the curriculum in other subjects.
Classes also engage in dance lessons as part of our PE curriculum which provide an opportunity to practise the listening skills and develop a deeper understanding of how music is used within performance.
We have a weekly singing assembly where we come together as a school community to practise together and learn songs linked to important aspects of school life and our curriculum.
We also learn about different composers and pieces of music as part of our assemblies and weekly Class Briefing.
A specialist music teacher comes in each week to offer lessons in guitar, piano and percussion for children.
