Broadcasting Student's Film Making Noise on the Festival Circuit

Third year broadcasting student Bosco Decosta's film Argemira is an official selection at the NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) InFocus Film Festival and the Orlando Film Festival.

The InFocus Film festival featured a Latino & Hispanic Cinema theme this year and was hosted by NewFilmmakers Los Angeles and The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Argemira premiered on September 14 at the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.

Argemira is a short documentary that narrates the life of an 85-year-old nun who had to overcome numerous obstacles to achieve her childhood dream. The film follows her emotional journey as she reflects on the challenges related to her womanhood, family and Catholic church traditions.

Up next for Argemira is the Orlando Film Festival with screenings on October 18 and 19.

Children's Media Grad Takes Over Kids World Stage at the CNE

Families who attended the CNE this year had the opportunity to check out Emmy-nominated Children's Media graduate Kim Persona's twice-daily performances on the Kid's World Stage as her character Miss Persona.

Her performances at the CNE come on the heels of her preschool program being nominated for two daytime Emmy Awards and recently being picked up by Treehouse TV, just four months after debuting on the network’s YouTube channel.

The delightful shows credits also include showrunner, director and Children's Media graduate Brandon Lane.

Animation Faculty to Speak at VFX Conference in Serbia

Story Arts Centre faculty members Laurence Cymet and Dalibor Dejanović have been asked by the Canadian embassy in Serbia to speak at a computer animation and VFX conference.

Laurence and Dalibor will travel to discuss the role of education in building a VFX sector and provide their perspective as industry professionals and educators to better engage industry professionals with educational institutions. The conference takes place in early November, they will also present to industry stakeholders at the Canadian embassy in the capital, Belgrade.

Laurence and Dalibor will not only share ideas around education, but also establish links with conference attendees and represent Centennial in this effort.

We are excited to be a small part of this delegation and for the collaboration opportunities that are to come.

3D Animation Faculty Member Matthew Lyon Creates movie Arctic Dogs Starring James Franco and Alec Baldwin

Our summer 3D Animation Coorindator Matthew Lyon was recently featured in Caledon Enterprise for his work on the feature length animated film Arctic Dogs

Matt is a tremendous animator and we are proud to have him on our team here at the Story Arts Centre. We look forward to the film's release late ratio Fall.

Dance Students Making Their Mark on the Entertainment and Dance Industry

Recent graduates Ashley Cole (pictured) and Sabrina La Plante are members of the Toronto Argos Dance team.

Feryn King, a young indigenous dancer, is now a Cirque Du Soleil performer currently on tour in Switzerland.

Jessica Lord is currently filming the third season of the Hulu Original Series Find me in Paris.

Second year student Nathaniel Scarlette was recently cast as a dancer and actor in the Netflix feature Work It. Work It is an upcoming coming of age dance comedy directed by Laura Terruso and produced by Alicia Keys, Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton.

Second year student Pritesh Mehta now performs with four Bollywood companies in Toronto and teaches at several other dance companies around town.

The Story Arts Centre Adds More Faculty Talent

The students may have been off on summer vacation but work on campus continued as we welcomed some amazing people to our team.

Some of the names are familiar and some are new but all will play an important role in the upcoming academic year.

Donna Lindell Named CPRS Toronto Educator of the Year, Joins Board of Directors

Donna Lindell, Program Coordinator and Professor in the post-graduate public relations program, was awarded Educator of the Year by the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) Toronto in May 2019.

The award recognizes Donna’s achievements as an educator, commitment to professional development and contribution to the profession. Donna was nominated by students, faculty, and members of the Program Advisory Committee

On September 25th, Donna was appointed to the Board of Directors of CPRS, demonstrating the College’s ongoing commitment to the profession, it’s code of ethics and network of employers in the Toronto-area.

Toronto-Danforth Federal Candidates Debate

Our students are busy working collaboratively across programs on an upcoming election debate for candidates in Toronto-Danforth, to be held October 10 at the Story Arts Centre.

Journalism students are prepping to write the news of the event, Broadcasting students are prepping for the live event feeds, Public Relations students are busy event planning and getting the message out on social media, and our Communications and Media Fundamentals students are busy prepping to capture ‘Behind-the-Scenes’ content and stories about the student experience.
