2019 Swim For Alligator Lighthouse SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2019

NEWSLETTER #2

We are less than 2 months out from this year's Swim For Alligator Lighthouse event! Some things to think about as the event gets closer:

  • Solo swimmers - have you added your kayaker to your registration?
  • Have more than one kayaker? You will need to have that person sign the waiver card and get a wristband at check-in
  • Want to attend the awards dinner? Buy your ticket NOW - there is a very limited number of tickets left.
  • Booked your hotel? Amara Cay is full, but check out Bud n' Mary's below for a special Swim For Alligator Lighthouse rate.
  • Have a 2, 3 or 4 person team? Make sure your training includes some kayak training, and how to get in and out of the kayak!
  • Is your kayak big enough and a sit on? If you are bringing a kayak for the swim it must be sit on top at least 12ft long and checked in by 7pm Friday to transition area. No exceptions.
  • Review the schedule, safety information and rules. All of this information is on the Swim For Alligator Lighthouse website - [Click here for Schedule -Safety - Rules]

WHAT CAN I EXPECT ON THE SWIM COURSE?

  • There are 15 buoys that will lead you out to Alligator Lighthouse and back - one every 1/4 mile
  • There is an arch at the Start/Finish and at the turn at the lighthouse
  • Powerboats must stay 100ft out

OTHER INFORMATION

  • The race is THIS close to being sold out. If you know someone who is waiting to sign up - now is the time!

Rob Kent is the President of the Global Swim Series and took part in the 2018 Swim For Alligator Lighthouse. Below, he answers some questions about the Global Swim Series, his experience swimming in the 2019 Swim For Alligator Lighthouse, and his tip for this year's swimmers!

What is the Global Swim Series? The Global Swim Series is the largest swim series in the world, with over 180 open water races, in 37 countries, and over 115,000 participants. The goal of the GSS is to promote the sport and to increase participation, as well as a healthy, active and adventurous lifestyle. We do that by marketing an incredible variety of great open water races around the world, offering Regional Championships and an overall Global Ranking competition that all swimmers are automatically entered into for each GSS race they do.

How does the Swim For Alligator contribute to the GSS? The Swim For Alligator Lighthouse is the host of this year's GSS North American Championship, one of the GSS Regional Championships, along with Regional Championships in: Europe, Canada, New Zealand, Africa, South East Asia, the Middle East, South America, the Mediterranean.

You took part in the 2018 Swim For Alligator Lighthouse - what do you remember best about the swim? The jellyfish! haha. It was our first ocean swim with that many jellyfish, but after the fact, it was part of the challenge and experience! The venue, course and unique relay style also made it a really memorable and fun swim!

We won't be able to make it this year, but look to come back in future years. But when we come back, we look forward to the cool venue, the Keys, the relays and even battling the jellyfish!

What advice do you have to new open water swimmers? It's open water, be prepared for anything and enjoy the adventure of the whole package!

How did you prepare for the swim? Basic distance training, but the one unique thing I would suggest training for this race is to practice getting in and out of a kayak in open water.
