National Sales challenge

School of Marketing students Chloe Faul, Macie Tullier, and Leighton Koennen attend the 2019 National Sales Challenge in New Jersey this month. During the three-day event, top sales students from over 35 universities met with representatives from major corporations for the sales competition. Overall, The University of Southern Mississippi was ranked #4, amongst the Top 10 University Sales Team Champions! Additionally, Leighton Koenenn was ranked #9 in the Top 10 Role Play Competition while Macie Tullier was #9 in the Top 10 Sales Challenge Champions and #2 in the Top 10 Role Play Competition! We are very proud of the hard work put in by these students!

Golden Idea Competition

The School of Management hosted the first Golden Idea Competition during the month of November. Over 25 teams submitted their ideas for consideration but only 10 teams had the opportunity to present their plans to a panel of expert judges. We heard many fantastic pitches from participants in the Golden Idea Competition. With all the amazing ideas, the judges made the difficult decision of selecting our winners:

Valerie Simmons recognized

The School of Accountancy honored Valerie Simmons for her many years of service to Beta Alpha Psi (BAP). We are so thankful for her commitment, dedication, and leadership. In line with the philosophy of Joe Paul, she certainly left the BAP chapter better than she found it, and we are sincerely grateful for her exemplary service to the School and, most importantly, for the many students’ lives that she touched during her tenure as BAP Faculty Advisor!

Inspired Leaders Series

A special thank you to Cindy Gaddis, for serving as our Fall 2019 Inspired Leaders Series speaker. Cindy recently retired as the Vice President of Finance and Global Downstream Controller for Shell Oil Company after 34 years. Over 100 students attended Cindy's truly inspiring story of being a female in a predominately male industry.

Aaron Beam on Ethics

Over 100 students attended Mr. Aaron Beam's thought-provoking and insightful presentation today on corporate fraud. Mr. Beam was the co-founder and former Chief Financial Officer of HealthSouth Corporation. He shared his story and lessons learned from his involvement in one of the biggest accounting scandals in U.S. history.

Faculty Complete ACUE

Congratulations to our amazing faculty members who completed the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) workshop. Dr. Greg Bradley and Dr. Wei Wang earned the USM certificate in Active Learning while Dr. Joanne Cao, Mr. Chris Balaski, Dr. Chris Croft, Mr. Russ Willis, and Dr. Reginald Wilson completed the last module in Effective Course Design and earned the certificate in Effective College Instruction.

Society for Marketing Advances Annual Conference

Recent MBA graduate, Tara Hosey, presented her research titled “Is Social Media Engagement Necessary? Investigating Expectations based on Gendered Brand Communication Styles” at the Society for Marketing Advances Annual Conference in New Orleans this month.

Three Minute Thesis

The Three Minute Thesis is an academic research communication competition that challenges graduate students to explain the significance of their research projects to a general audience in three minutes or less. Four students from the College of Business and Economic Development participated this year.

  • Rachel Bronson (Master of Science in Sport Management) "Building on the International and Diverse Make-up of a Baseball Organization and How Teams Capitalize on it."
  • Caroline Cenci (Master of Science in Economic Development): "What are the Motivations for Publicly Funded Sports Stadiums, and Can the Same Ideas Apply in Rural Communities?"
  • Nichada Satasuk (Master of Science in Economic Development and Master of Business Administration): "Professional Athletics and Social Media Sponsorship."
  • Nirmala Baral (Master of Business Administration): "Leading with Emotional Intelligence."

Beta Gamma Sigma Induction & Student Fall awards

November Class visits

  • Hattiesburg Clinic: Kristy Gould and Harlon Aultman from Hattiesburg Clinic participated in Dr. Kelli King's MKT 471 (Marketing in the Healthcare Industry) class. Students completed a real-world scenario healthcare marketing project and presented their plans to Kristy and Harlon.
  • Northwestern Mutual: Representatives spoke with the Chris Balaski's Advanced Professional Selling students.
  • MSCPA - Karen Moody and Lydia Windham spoke to Amber Hatten's BA 211, introducing students to the MSCPA and the Mississippi Young CPA Network. They discussed careers in the accounting profession and the importance of communication, involvement and networking while in college and after.
  • Pfizer: Healthcare Marketing students participated in a lunch-and-learn with Bobby Smith and Ashley Castleman from Pfizer. Students learned about Pfizer, the role of a territory manager, networking and interview tips.
