Highlighted Funding Opportunities
- UNC System Research Opportunities Initiative (ROI) Program, Limited Submission Opportunity, Jan. 20: The UNC System ROI Program provides targeted funding for innovative and potentially game-changing research initiatives. The 2020 awards focus on institutional block grants to fund initiatives designed to increase research capacity in one or more of the following target research areas: advanced manufacturing; marine and coastal science; defense, military and security; pharmacoengineering; energy; and data science. Research grants may request from 1-3 years of funding at a maximum of $500,000 a year. For the 2020 sward cycle, each UNC System institution may only submit one proposal. The ECU internal deadline for the pre-proposals is 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20. Internal reviews will be completed by Jan. 31 and a complete application of the selected proposal from ECU is due to the UNC System office by March 1. Evaluation criteria includes: intellectual merit of the proposed activity; project fit and feasibility; and potential impact. - National Institutes of Health Ethical Issues in Translational Science Research, Jan. 6: This grant opportunity goes toward research that addresses ethical issues in translational science research. Collaboration between bioethicists, legal scholars, social scientists and translational research scientists is encouraged. The focus is to develop knowledge to inform the ethical development, modification or application of novel findings, technologies and approaches to improve human health, including their impact on individuals, families, communities and society.
- National Institutes of Health Small Research Grant Program for the Next Generation of Researchers in AD/ADRD Research, Jan. 16: This Small Research Grant (R03) will support important and innovative projects to provide needed scientific insight to improve the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and/or care for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD).
- National Endowment for the Humanities Digital Humanities Advancement Grants, Jan. 20: Digital Humanities Advancement Grants (DHAG) support digital projects at different stages throughout their lifecycles, from early startup phases through implementation and sustainability. Experimentation, reuse and extensibility are hallmarks of this program, leading to innovative work that can scale to enhance scholarly research, teaching, and public programming in the humanities.
- National Science Foundation Science and Technology Studies (STS), Feb. 3: The Science and Technology Studies (STS) program supports research that uses historical, philosophical and social scientific methods to investigate the intellectual, material and social facets of the scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical (STEM) disciplines. It encompasses a broad spectrum of topics including interdisciplinary studies of ethics, equity, governance and policy issues that are closely related to STEM disciplines.

- Using Databases to Find Funding Opportunities, Nov. 13: This hands-on session will focus on searching for grant funding opportunities in various databases such as SPIN and Foundation Directory Online. Faculty are encouraged to sign up for a SPIN username and password prior to the session.
- Measuring Your Research Impact, Nov. 26: This session will cover various tools and resources that you can use to measure the impact of your scholarly work. Additionally, it will cover emerging tools, like Almetrics, and discuss ways to expand the reach of your work.
