Settling the West Push and pull factors

What are push and pull factors?

PUSH factors make you want to leave, and PULL factors make you want to find.

Pull Factors to move west

The Government encouraged people to move West. A few factors that also pulled people West were:

Cheap land, gold, and economic prosperity

Pull factor: The Gold Rush

Pull Factor - Cheap Land

Homestead Act -May 20, 1862

The Homestead Act accelerated the settlement of the western territory by granting heads of families 160 acres of public land for a small payment and 5 years of continuous residence on that land.

Morrill Land Grant Act - 1862

The Act provided grants of land to states to finance the establishment of colleges specializing in “agriculture and the mechanic arts.”

Take a look at these land advertisements. Why might these pull people West?
