WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TAKES DOWN TWO MIAC OPPONENTS

Gusties vs. Macalester - Dec. 5

GAC 70 - 56 MAC

  • After struggling of late from behind the arc shooting 2-34 in their past two games, the Gusties finally started to see some shots go down from three point range going 5-15 in tonight’s contest.
  • Justine Lee led the way with 16 points to go along with four steals.
  • Kendall Thompson tallied 13 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals, while Paige Richert notched another double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
  • As a team the Gusties out-rebounded the Scots 29-25 but won the offensive rebound battle 14-5 which helped them win second chance points over Macalester 12-6.

Gusties vs. Saint Mary's - Dec. 8

GAC 65 - 56 SMU

  • Justine Lee posted a career-high 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting to lead the Gustavus women’s basketball team to a 65-56 win over Saint Mary’s Saturday at Gus Young Court.
  • The Gusties forced 21 turnovers throughout the game, 14 via the steal. Gustavus finished the game at 41 percent shooting from the field and outscored the Cardinals 38-22 in the paint.
  • Behind Lee, Paige Richert tallied 16 points. Kendall Thompson and Maddie Wagner led the Gusties on the boards with five rebounds apiece.
“We set the tone in the first quarter, particularly on defense, forced a lot of turnovers and were able to transition,” Head Coach Laurie Kelly said. “We made shots early. We’ve struggled on the offensive side to finish shots, but Justine Lee was key for us tonight. Even when they made the run in the second quarter, we were able to turn it around and go into the locker room with some momentum.”

Gusties at Macalester - Dec. 5

GAC 87 - 50 MAC

  • Gustavus Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Hanson earned his 500th career victory Wednesday night as the Gusties defeated Macalester 87-50. Now in his 29th season at the helm, Hanson becomes the 16th active NCAA Division III men’s basketball coach to reach the milestone with a record of 500-267.
  • Nolan Malo had the best game of his young career, scoring 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field, including three three-pointers. CJ Woda added 14 points and a team-high six rebounds.
  • Gustavus shot a season-high 59.4 percent from the field, making 38-of-64 shots, including 10-of-22 from beyond the arc.
  • The Gusties had a strong inside game, out-rebounding the Scots 34-25 and outscoring the home team 42-10 in the paint.
“This means I’ve been coaching a long time, and I’ve had some outstanding young men who have won a lot of games,” Hanson said modestly.

Gusties vs. Saint Mary's - Dec. 8

GAC 81 - 86 SMU

  • After shooting just 35.1 percent in the first half as a team, Saint Mary’s shot 54.3 percent in half number two and knocked down eight three pointers to propel them to a 53 point second half effort.
  • The Gusties were led by Malo who had 24 points, shooting 7-10 from the field and he also corralled seven rebounds. Spencer Tollefson had seven rebounds to go along with 11 points for the home team.
  • After shooting 46.7 percent in the first half, the Gusties shot 56.0 percent in the second half but couldn’t get enough stops on the defensive end to secure the victory.
  • In the game Gustavus had a season high 22 assists, but they also turned the ball over 13 times compared to just five from Saint Mary’s.

Gusties vs. UW-River Falls - Dec. 5

GAC 1 - 2 UWRF

  • After a scoreless first period the Falcons got the scoring started with a shorthanded goal 5:43 into the second period. The Gusties answered less than four minutes later when Allie Stanger scored, with assists going to Lilia Scheid and Laine Fischer.
  • 54 seconds into the third period the Falcons scored what proved to be the game-winner as the Gusties put five more shots on net in the third period but the Falcon goaltender saved them all to hold onto the 2-1 victory.
  • Amanda DiNella got the start in net and made 21 saves while allowing two goals in the loss.

Gusties vs. UW-River Falls - Dec. 8

GAC 0 - 4 UWRF

  • The Falcons scored an even strength goal just 47 seconds into the contest and from there on out they used strong special teams play to defeat the Gusties. At the 4:36 mark they scored a power play goal, then less than 7 minutes later they found the back of the net with a short handed goal to take the 3-0 lead.
  • The game went scoreless for nearly 20 minutes before the Falcons struck again 11 minutes into the second period on another power play goal to gain a 4-0 edge that would hold out for the victory.
  • Amanda DiNella suffered the loss in the contest making 11 saves while allowing four goals. Paige Press played the final period and allowed no goals while making five saves.

Men's Hockey falls to No. 15 St. Scholastica by a score of 3-1

Gusties vs. St. Scholastica - Dec. 7

GAC 1 - 3 CSS

  • Despite not getting the win on the ice, Gustavus earned a victory for its charitable efforts by hosting the annual Teddy Bear Toss Game, which collected hundreds of new stuffed animals with donations going to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.
  • After a scoreless first period, St. Scholastica took a 1-0 lead 5:09 into the second and held that advantage after 40 minutes of play.
  • The Saints gained a two-goal advantage 3:30 into the third period, which proved to be the game-winner.
  • Less than a minute later, Gustavus went on the power play for the first time and scored 23 seconds into the man advantage as Mason Etter knocked in his first goal of the season, assisted by Brenden Payne and Caleb Anderson.
  • With time winding down, Gustavus pulled goalie Robbie Goor for an extra attacker and the Saints netted an empty-netter with 45 seconds on the clock.

Track and field sends nine to chuck peterson invite

  • A small contingent of the Gustavus men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams kicked off the indoor season Saturday at the Chuck Peterson Open & Multi, hosted by Minnesota State-Mankato.
  • Four athletes on the men’s team and five from the women’s squad competed on Saturday.
