Well, last night was a treat for sure—we went to Reno, Nevada (2 hr drive from home) for a Rod Stewart Concert! We stayed at the Silver Legacy Resort which is merely one block away so we could just walk over in the fine fall weather. I like Rod’s music, and I know a lot of his lyrics only because I heard them a million times as they were etched into my music memory by my Mom! She LOVES Rod Stewart! She played his albums and tapes until they worn out! So, when we heard about the concert, I knew we should take mom. I told her we were taking her on a date-- a blind date. With someone she knew—but he probably didn’t know her much… we played along the guessing game and mom wasn’t too sure she was keen on the idea, but when I said it was a Rod Steward concert, she just cried! OMG—how could I have known she would love it so much!
So the week went by (with mom so excited she couldn’t stand it!!) and we planned a fun drive, dinner and concert. I was actually pretty stoked that I still had my #Lumix 50-200mm lens on loan from Panasonic, so I could photograph the fall leaves on the trip over the sierras to Reno and then get some great Concert shots! Getting ready for the concert, I packed up my camera and lens and Jon said, “you can’t take that- you’ll have to walk back to the hotel to return it!” But I thought, “Why? But it’s small enough and fits in my purse!”
Not willing to risk the night walk alone to return the camera, I called security to be sure. Dang! He was right—AGAIN! The policy is no cameras with removable lenses. Only point and shoots! Augh. I was deflated. So bummed out. FORTUNATELY, I had brought along my little pocket-size ZS100 for mom to shoot with when we go explore the mountains and see the fall colors on the way back. Hmmm…. So that’s my only option….. sigh. (rolls eyes, feeling sorry for myself)
Well, I have to say, I was actually impressed!! Not only with Rod Stewart, who did a GREAT show, but also with the #LumixZS100! You know, it’s just having realistic expectations… after all he is in his 70’s, and well, this tiny camera is no bigger than a pack of cigarettes! I would say the dude’s “still got it” and knows how to connect with the audience and entertain, even with his broken foot in a cast! The balloon drop and the ensuing chaos and frenzy was such a highlight too! It was one of my favorite parts!
But the biggest delight was how well the ZS100 did! Shockingly so! We had OK seats on the floor level, so we definitely needed a long lens. But with iZoom (a feature I hadn’t used for 2 yrs because I have a bunch of long pro lenses) we were able to get out to a 500mm equivalent with the built-in 25-250mm lens! Here’s a few samples with iZoom. The trick is to change the shooting quality to Jpg only (can’t do raw) when you shoot in iZoom and it boosts your telephoto by up to 100%. By the way, these are straight out of camera.
The zoom range on that camera actually allowed me to not only zoom in on the artists, but get the whole digital presentation, which was pretty dynamic.
Rod’s theme was…. B&W checks-- even the mic stand and the piano stand was checkered!
Every song had great themed graphics that kept you engrossed and visually engaged while your audio senses were equally as overwhelmed! #PureEyeCandy
One of my favorite themes and songs.... The First Cut is the Deepest-- He engaged the audience to sing along on this one and was clearly, so delighted with it! I love the video.....
So there you have it-- a fun night in the biggest little city in the world! Im excited to see another concert with mom (and so is she!) and I think I may just carry my lil ZS100 around with me more often!
