March/April 2018 Newsletter of The Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City

President’s Message

2018 is starting to be a great year for me personally and for our association. My recent trip to the Philippines made the old saying “Kill 2 birds with one stone” a perfect description of my recent travel. I was able to manage and coordinate the very successful 25th Medical Mission sponsored by PMS/PNA of Greater Kansas City in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. On the same trip, I was able to attend the PNAA Global Summit and International Nursing Conference held in the City of Dreams, visit my hometown, Tayabas, Quezon, my wife, Beth’s hometown in San Marcelino, Zambales and secure our retirement place in Bonifacio Global City. Needless to say, although I was gone and traveled so far, I cannot separate my thoughts of my commitments and our year-round activities highlighting our 50 th Anniversary of our association.

Our first event the Pinoy breakfast last March 3 was a huge success which was sponsored by the now famous, Housewives of Johnson County. I was very confident that they will be great to host this kickoff event for this year as I witnessed these ladies in action last year when they helped with the Fiesta and Ethnic Festival and cooked the popular “pancit” led by Venir Rivera. I would like to convey my most sincere gratitude to these ladies including their husbands, significant others, families and friends for a job well done. To all officers, volunteers, donors, members and guests, I thank you for your contribution to the success of this event. I applaud our Membership Chair, Marjorie Doronio for her energy and enthusiasm recruiting and signing up new members. My warm welcome to all of you.

Our first issue of Tambuli is out and congratulations to our Editor in Chief, Nita Norris. Please send her any interesting topic, article and reports you wish to be published in our newsletter. Email link here.

As a businessman, I find myself talking about the bottom line, but in the long run, whether business, social, civic and spirituality all have the same bottom line. This bottom line I am talking about here is not the financial aspect but rather all the great things that we are doing to our community. The existence of our Filipino Cultural Center has brought about many events that celebrate our Filipino culture and traditions. The gatherings we’ve had have given us a feeling of belongingness and somehow satisfy our longing for our homeland, the Philippines.

I therefore, encourage everyone to support all our activities or events and sign up to be a volunteer, be an officer or fill in some of our vacant positions in our association’s Committees. This is your chance to be “at the table” and have your voices and ideas heard. This is one of the reasons why my wife and myself have volunteered so much in many organizations. We want to make a difference and want to make those changes that we all want to happen. Be proactive and become that change and make a difference to our Filipino Community, to our home away from home, the Filipino Cultural Center.

No matter where I am, I am just a phone call or text away.

At your service,

Reminiscences of Past Presidents of the Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City

by Manuel P Pardo M.D.

The year was 1972. The President of the United States was Richard Nixon. The Mayor of Kansas City was Dr. Charles Wheeler.

The Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City, incorporated as a not for profit 501 (c)3 organization, was just in its infancy, baptized by Dr. Eddie Lorenzo and confirmed by the late Dr. Arnuldo Sulit. I had just returned to Kansas City the year before after a 2 year forced return to the Philippines due to visa problem. It interrupted my previous 6 years of service at KU Medical Center on an exchange US visitors visa. Determined to my make Kansas City my home, after finding it a nice place to raise a family, my wife and I settled in Prairie Village, Kansas with our 2 sons and a daughter.

My vision for the Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City at the time was to introduce the young organization to the Greater Kansas City community as a visible ethnic minority association. Fortunately, we found in our midst a young former Bayanihan dancer, Manuel de Leon. He graciously agreed to organize and lead a dance group of eager Filipinos willing to learn Filipino folk dances. Lillian and I spearheaded and guided the formation of a dance troupe. The unanimous choice for a name was Sinag-Tala Dance Troupe. After a few performances before schools and social groups the dance troupe soon won recognition enough to make it as a cover story of the Sunday Kansas City Star Magazine.

To add to the social life of the members in addition to the monthly membership meeting we formed a Filipino Association Bowling League that met weekly at the Plaza Bowl. Trophies were awarded to those who distinguished themselves as good bowlers. From that point on the association saw a cohesive group grow to the group that they are now.

End of my year!!!!

April Pinoy Breakfast

by Curtis D. Jay

Another successful and well attended Pinoy breakfast is in the books! This month's breakfast was sponsored by the FCCF, and their board members are extremely grateful for all those who participated and supported this event. Attendees definitely walked away having seen a vibrant celebration of culture, food and community.

In addition to the delicious unique Filipino flavors of tocino, longaniza, jeprox and beef steak (and many other dishes), there were plenty of activities for all ages. The Go Big Skill Toy Store brought tables of toys that provided fun and entertainment for the kids. And it wouldn't be a Filipino party without music! The volunteer DJ and performers got the crowd moving and grooving to some favorite Filipino songs. The Johnson County Housewives were also there to help lend their support in numerous ways. A big thank you also goes out to the birthday club for having their celebration at this month's Pinoy Breakfast - their continued support is greatly appreciated.

It takes a lot of volunteers to put together such a successful event. The Tagalog word bayanihan, which means to be a hero to each other, is the perfect word to sum up our community's sense of helping each other. Thanks to our wonderful and supportive group, we have a vibrant community we can all be proud of.

Easter Picnic

by Lira Susan Bergeron

The true meaning of Easter is sometimes overshadowed by all the concentrated effort in the preparation for the fun anticipation of gathering with family and friends, and of course, the traditional egg hunt for the children. Lest we forget God's exceeding grace and unconditional love that brought us to this day: God's plan of man's redemption accomplished by the life, passion and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ!

The intent and focus of the Easter Picnic of the FAGKC was both the recognition and acceptance of the important significance of Easter and the traditional celebration of family, friends and children!

The huge task of formulating concepts for this day fell on a novice at this responsibility, a wife and a mother of three, Rose Balanay Kinyon, who readily accepted such a responsibility. Her confidence stemmed from her trust in supportive friends and reliable resources of creative ideas, generosity of time and finances and the true bayanihan spirit of the Filipino community.

At the outset, Rose was clear on minimizing the cost that would be incurred in the process. Then followed meetings and conversations to brainstorm, to plan and to finalize all the details involved in the event.

April 1, 2018: Easter!

The weather forecast was not looking favorable. The day was cold and wet. But surprise !!! People came with their families, with children and grandchildren in tow! The children joined in an impromptu parade with proud parents and grandparents watching and clicking to take as much picture as they can.

Before lunch was served, Ernie Rosas, shared the significance of Easter and a brief synopsis of how Easter was traditionally celebrated in the Philippines. This was followed by a prayer of thanksgiving and blessing for our meal by Kelly Tumanut. And what a spread we had; everyone feasted on a sumptuous lunch!

And who could forget the hilarious laughter and entertainment from the games, reminiscent of the old fashioned games, some of us can still recall playing as children: sack race, tumbang patis, duck walk, to name a few! And so it was for the young and not so young—delighting in the moment!

Unforgettable too are the beautiful contributions of our talented children! We were serenaded by a violin performance by Celina Starkey and a sweet rendition of " Give Thanks" by Sophie Kinyon!

The dismal weather could not dampen the excited anticipation and gleeful joy when it came time for the actual egg hunt. The cold and wet outdoor condition required quick thinking and change of plan! What was to be an egg hunting activity became an egg picking one at the cultural center's foyer. You would thought it was a gold rush as the children rushed into the foyer with just as much enthusiasm, energy and joy! Oh, so many eggs and candies and so little time!!!

This was another awesome opportunity to witness the Filipino pride and camaraderie. The day ended with our hearts are full and our lives blessed for the opportunity to give.

The success of this event is the result of dedicated and determined effort of the many people, among them are:

Adela and Mike Tan: consultant, adviser, flyer designer and in charge of the additional food for our lunch and managing the kitchen. She commissioned a small lamb cake which was part of the decor in the buffet table.

Lira Susan Bergeron and Edwin Mabaquiao: for developing creative concepts for the theme, providing colorful table center pieces, Easter egg cutouts, bunny and photo booth frame, and accessories

Frances Magarin: Rose’s right hand woman and go to person! She has a big part in keeping expenses down and being such a bargain and smart shopper. Thanks for patiently wrapping and getting ribbons on all the prizes and gifts!

Paul and Flo Jackson: for being another creative soul providing a fantastic Easter vignette on our buffet table, for a supportive husband.

Alcy Malkmus Espinoza: for making the Easter wreath and being a tremendous support and adviser all throughout the planning process.

Kelly Tumanut: for taking the time from his family celebration to do the Invocation.

Jojie Doronio: for being such an enthusiastic help throughout the entire process.

Jim Kinyon: for your support and generosity, for allowing Rose to take on the responsibility which she did with flying colors!

To the rest of those who came to prepare for the event and our cleanup crew and to all those who donated prizes for the games and candies and to a very generous anonymous donor with hidden money in the candies for the kids, our very heartfelt gratitude.

To our FAGKC President Ernie Rosas, thank you for your support and confidence in Rose in opening to her the opportunity to serve our Filipino community in celebrating Easter!

Education Activity 2018

sponsored by the FA-GCK Seniors’ Council

By Helen Austin, co-chair Seniors’ Council

Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and diligence —Abigail Adams

On March 17, 2018 the Seniors’ Council held its education activity. Two speakers gave very informative presentations on subject matters that are very valuable to them.

Fitness is not about being better than someone else…it’s about being better than you used to be. —Unknown

Wendi Coffman-Stanley, a personal trainer and cancer exercise specialist, marathon runner and has taught “Silver Sneakers” & Adult Fitness Classes spoke on personal fitness, balance & core strength, flexebility, ROM, stretching, nutrition tips & guidance. She discussed seniors staying physically active and gave demonstration of some basic exercises to help maintain core and lower extremities strength essential for balance and therefore prevent falls especially in the elderly. Our seniors gave return demonstration.

It all begins with you. If you do not care for yourself, you will not be strong enough to take care of anything in life. —Leon Brown

Dr. Bill Stites III, is the Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology at Research Medical Center. He graduated Magna Cum Laude at the University of Missouri Medical School, was a Fellow of Interventional Cardiology at St Luke’s Hospital as well as the University Western Ontario, London, Ontario. He engaged his audience with his topic on Atrial Fibrillation. It is, he explained, a medical condition that is very common and often ignored condition in the elderly population which often presents itself with symptoms of fatigue or feeling unusually tired, dizziness and shortness of breath often dismissed as “just signs of aging” or “it will go away if I just rest”. The group learned valuable information on the most recent diagnostic testings, medicatons, and treatments utilizing Electrophysiology surgery. He stressed to our seniors the importance of not ignoring the signs and symptoms of Atrial Fibrillation and therefore preventing its most devastating complication of Stroke, caused by a blood clot from Atrial Fibrillation that travels to a blood vessel in the brain.
