Note from our Head
It has been a wonderful week at Oakfield with much to feel celebratory about. I should start with the visit today of Kye Whyte and his mentor and Peckham institution Ck Flash to Oakfield. It was fantastic to welcome them and we cannot thank them enough for their inspiring words and time with the children - there are likely to be many more following in the footsteps of Kye and our very own BMX superstar Anoushka by the sounds of it! Thank you to Sarah Thomas and the sports department for helping organise the visit and make it such a great success for both the staff and children.
We were also delighted to be awarded the UNICEF Rights Respecting: Bronze Award as we continue to develop our CPSHE and look to move on to achieving the Silver Award before too long. We place large focus on ensuring every individual within our school community feels they are heard and respected. Thank you to Victoria Barrett-Nnochiri and Siobhan Winter for leading the charge on receiving the award!
Finally, this is Issue 100 of our Newsletter which is a milestone worth recognising and we hope you continue to enjoy reading about all the amazing things that take place at Oakfield week in and week out.
Have wonderful weekends everyone.

BIRTHDAY BROADCAST
KYE WHYTE VISIT
We were so privileged to have a visit from Olympic silver medallist Kye Whyte and his manager, mentor and Peckham BMX Club founder Mike aka Ck Flash to lead our Assembly today. The children got to watch his Olympic race, ask Kye questions and watch a BMX tutorial from Kye himself and our very own BMX superstar Anoushka!
We learnt about the journey of how the BMX course at Burgess Park was funded and built, Mike's amazing success in developing British talent over many years including the Whyte brothers and Kye's journey to Tokyo 2020. We hope the children were truly inspired and learnt about what you can achieve with hard work, resilience and courage to try new things.
South London is blessed with BMX tracks at Brockwell Park, Burgess Park, Croydon and elsewhere. The link to the Peckham BMX club is below for those who want to give it a go!
We will have a longer vid about Kye's visit on our Instagram page but in the meantime check out the trick below!
Eco Warriors
The eco warriors are leading celebrations for World Car-Free day!
We are making a competition next week between all Oakfield classes; the class who travel to school in the most eco-friendly way by the end of the week will receive a special treat from Miss Francis. In our eco warrior meeting we discussed the benefits of using eco-friendly travel and played a 'Car-Free Day' board game with an eco warrior from a different year group. If you landed on a bike square then you had to answer an eco themed question; some of them were trickier than others!
SPORT
Sports Stars of the Week are for our SWIMMERS!
I am really impressed by these children's determination!

YEAR 6
English
This term in Year 6, we are learning about 'Global War and Conflict in the 20th Century'. In English we have been studying a book called 'Rose Blanche' written from the perspective of a German child during WW2. The children discussed different themes such as redemption, secrecy, anger, hate, sympathy and peace. We then debated in groups which we felt were the most relevant themes for this text and completed a zones of relevance target board sheet. The children were passionate in their debates and were consistently encouraged to give clear evidence for their views.
Science
We were learning to investigate several different factors that could have impacted the damage caused by an asteroid hitting earth. We discussed how the size, weight, speed, angle, surface hit, distance travelled, type of rock, shape etc. could potentially all make a difference to the damage caused. We decided to investigate the distance the asteroid travelled, the different surfaces it could have landed on and the size of the asteroid. We were very careful with our variables and some of us were surprised that the largest asteroid didn't necessarily mean the deepest crater.
YEAR 5
This week Year 5 enjoyed their topic of Victorians through our drama lessons. We looked at how people moved, feel and engaged with their surroundings. The children looked at the language of the time too. It was wonderful to see the stories the children are learning come to life.
Well done to Naia who has donated to the Little Princess Trust, you are making a difference!
YEAR 2
As usual the Year 2 Children have been learning all sorts of new concepts and ideas! During our English lesson the children put on their ‘interviewer’ hats and interviewed characters from Alice in Wonderland! The children made specific questions to ask their partners who role played as characters from the story Alice in Wonderland. What questions would you ask the Mad Hatter if you had the chance?
During Geography this week the children have been exploring atlases and Google Earth to research the cities and countries of the United Kingdom and Europe!
YEAR 1
Maths
In Maths, the children have been learning the place value of digits within 30. They represented numbers using a variety of resources, and started to compare two numbers using language such as: greater than, less than and equal to.
SOUTH AFRICA HERITAGE DAY
Miss Zoe Beavon aka Miss B brought in treats from her homeland to celebrate South African Heritage Day.
COMPOSER OF THE WEEK
Dear musical explorers,
Every week at Oakfield we have a composer of the week who we listen to in lessons and in assemblies. We've had a long hiatus, but Composer of the Week is back! It's a double header this week, so without further ado...
Alexandre Desplat is a composer who you may not have heard of, but have definitely heard. He was nominated for two Oscars in the same year for his soundtracks to The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game and won the award for the former. He also composed the soundtracks to Secret Life of Pets, The Shape of Water and Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows, which couldn't be more different in tone and scope. He is versatile, entertaining and a prolific creator, meaning we have plenty of his work available to enjoy!
Frederick Chopin was a virtuosic pianist and composed mainly for the instrument he loved. His work is instantly recognisable, although often intensely and beautifully melancholic. The catchily name Prelude no.15 in D Flat Major (often referred to as the Raindrop Prelude as it tells the story of a rainstorm) is one of his best known works, along with the equally snappily named Nocturn no.2 in E Flat Major and Prelude no.4 in E Minor. If you need to chill out find one of his playlists and let it take you away!
