A Glance at the Cobras
The Coker College field hockey team will host Queens in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action on Wednesday (Oct. 17) at 5 PM. Live stats and video will be available at www.cokercobras.com. Tickets for the match are $5 for adults, $3 for students, and free to all Coker faculty, staff, and students.
Last Time Out
The Cobras last played on Oct. 10 and dropped a tight 2-1 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas match to Belmont Abbey.
The first half of action presented a defensive battle as both defensive units held the opposing offenses to just two shots each in the first half. After a scoreless first half, the Cobras found the back of the net just ten minutes into the second half. Cordrey beat the Crusaders goalkeeper and finished down by the cage. Carla Deuble was credited with the well-placed assist.
Next, Belmont Abbey responded quickly by evening the game at one apiece just three minutes later. Both squads battled for scoring chances until Belmont Abbey took advantage of an opportunity in the 61st minute to pull ahead of Coker 2-1. The Cobras pushed the pace in the final minutes of regulation, earning three consecutive penalty corners. However, Coker failed to capitalize and fell to the Crusaders 2-1.
Cordrey led the Cobras with one goal and three shots on goal. Deuble, Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole, and Kelly Mason recorded one shot each. In goal, Kelsey Gibbons collected three saves. As a team, the Navy and Gold outshot Belmont Abbey 6-5 and created more penalty corners (8-5).
Player to Watch
Kelsey Gibbons has played and started in all of Coker's five matches this season. The freshman goalkeeper has a 3.20 goals against average, allowing 16 goals (second best in conference) in five total matches. The Cortland, New York native has gathered 18 saves and currently has a 52.9 save percentage.
Gibbons is a chemistry major and is the daughter of Michael and Michelina Gibbons.

Scouting the Queens University Royals
The Queens Royals head into Wednesday's game atop the conference with a 7-3 overall record, including a 5-0 mark in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas competition. The Royals have defeated Newberry (5-2), Mansfield (3-2), Converse (6-0 and 3-1), Belmont Abbey (3-1), Bellarmine (5-4 OT), and defeated the Cobras 6-3 back on Oct. 3.
The Royals headed into the season voted to finish second in the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Preseason Poll behind Limestone College. Queens offensive attack is led by Karla von Ehren who is second in the conference in both goals (6) and points (15). She is also fourth in the conference in assists with three. Senior forward Mazvita Mtisi isn't far behind Von ehren with 12 points off of five goals and two assists. Defensively, freshman goalkeeper Jet van den Berg has had a solid 2018 campaign as she sits third in the conference in saves (44) and goals against average (2.65).
Player to Watch
Karla von Ehren heads into tomorrow's contest near the top of the conference's offensive statistic leaders. She is second in the conference in both goals (6) and points (15). She is also fourth in the conference in assists with three. The freshman forward has fired off 21 shots, including 15 on goal and has two game-winners.
