Prom on the Pavement offers upperclassmen relief after year of online school photos and captions by Elliot Russell

Ahead of the event, attendees reserved pods consisting of two parking spots; one to park in and the one adjacent to dance in. However, parking was of little concern to seniors Princess J’Maria Mboup and Kody Ivy, who arrived in the rustic comfort of a horse-drawn wagon.

While the parking lot may not seem like the most glamorous setting for prom, attendees were able to make the most of it. Event organizer and teacher Sveri May handed out goody bags filled with snacks and sidewalk chalk for students to spruce up their pods. Others went the extra mile by decorating their cars ahead of time, refusing to sacrifice the splendor of a usual prom.

The scheduled drone flyover, intended to capture the event from a bird’s eye view, was cancelled due to airspace restrictions. Minutes later, a hot air balloon drifted over the parking lot to the surprise of both attendees and event organizers.

From the beginning of the event, attendees were expected to stay socially-distanced in their respective pods. However, as the sun began to set, groups congregated near the DJ booth, forming a dance floor that harkened back to the pre-pandemic era. This “return to normal” did not dissipate until the end of the event.

In spite of yet another setback in a year full of setbacks, everyone gathered for a group photo: a final moment of reunion for the classes of 2021 and 2022.
