The spring semester is usually a memorable one for college students, especially seniors. However, a global pandemic was not something anyone expected to happen in this year. 2020 is usually known as perfect sight, but with Covid-19 we are thrown into the unknown of what this means for our future.
With students across the globe being sent home from campus so quickly, they still need to complete the semester online. Telecommuting can be tough to adapt to, but it is a valuable skill to learn. With seniors graduating, many interviews will be virtual as opposed to face-to-face.
A study shows that, when done properly, telework can improve productivity, creativity, and morale. Many students don't mind working from home, and actually are able to get more done. With converting to online classes, most schools have been conducting classes using either Webex or Zoom.
Although some don't mind online classes, others feel like it can be distracting and hard to find a quiet space to do work. It can also be hard to stay motivated while balancing 15 and more credits as a full time students. As a result, many schools have offered the Pass/No Credit option.
There can be many challenges to telecommuting, and I now know what my mom goes through everyday working remotely. I personally have found it hard to concentrate with background noise living in a house with 4 people and a dog currently.
As for the job search, I think it will be difficult for us seniors to get a job right away, especially in the communications field. A lot of employers will probably hinder applications until the country opens back up both physically and economically.
Employers that will hire, will have to conduct virtual interviews and virtual on boardings. I think what students are doing now, is actually preparing them for that step. We are telecommuting and having real meetings and discussions with our professors and classmates.
David Campos, a student at Loyola University Maryland Class of 2020, said that he preferred online classes as opposed to face-to-face instruction. He said that he feels more comfortable behind a screen, rather than interacting in person. However, it can be difficult for him to find quiet space in the house.
"Telecommuting can be challenging, but it can also be useful because people can spend more time with their family" - David Campos
Another student at Binghamton University Class of 2020, Fubei Emily Lubin, said that it is difficult for her to do senior labs as a science major and studio art minor, because she has no materials from a far.
"things are totally changed online. You have to learn more from videos and it has turned into more of a lecture course." - Fubei Lubin
"Communicating all these changes from something that is so stable, like commencement to families and students is incredibly difficult" - Fubei Lubin
As hard as everything is right now, we will all get through this together. The most positive thing to come out of this is a sense of communities coming together. As uncertain as we are what our future is, I hope that we get back to normal soon.
