January: Hi! I'm Donzel Marshall and I'm a student at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Flossmoor, IL. I am 15 years old and I play soccer, basketball, and track and field. My favorite thing about Special Olympics is hanging out with friends. My favorite music group is the Wiggles.
February: My inclusion hero isn't my teacher, or one of my friends. My hero is Mrs. Pinnow. She is an econ teacher whose classroom is down the hall from mine. Everyday she makes sure she comes to see me and ask about my day. Every time she sees me in the hallways she always says hello to me and my friends and hangs out. What she does means a lot to me because she doesn't have to do any of this but she does because she wants too.
March: I love seeing TV shows and movies that have someone with a disability in it. I really like the movie Wonder. It was relatable at times for me. Seeing how the movie showed the difficult parts of the main characters life and how he over came his hard times was amazing. I wished more movies were like wonder and more TV shows and movies used actors who have disabilities like me.
April: My school always does a banner signing for respect week which i enjoy because i get to talk to a bunch of new people. This year we got to hand out new cool stuff like pens, wrist bands, lanyards, and stickers. I personally think the stickers are the best part. My school also went to special games where I got to play a bunch of fun games with my partner. I can't wait for more activities that will happen in the up coming year.
May: Staying healthy is important for me because I hate getting sick and missing school. I got the flu when it was winter because it went around my school and i had to miss two days of school. I miss my friends and my teachers. Not only did the flu go around but so did the stomach flu! Thankfully I didn't catch it. A few of my friends did though. It's like it went around the whole town and school. But I always remember to wash my hands and stay away from sick people.
June: I love my family so much! They always support me in special olympics and when I have games or torments. My mom loves helping me practice when I have an event coming up or taking me somewhere for school when I have something fun. My dad loves listening to the wiggles with me. Although I do wish Maggie was my sister but we are definitely twins at school.
July: SUMMER!!!!! who doesn't love summer. Even though I'm in summer school I still love it because i get to see all my school friends. But when i'm not in school I do sports and stuff at SSSRA a place where everything is inclusive. They make sure everyone is having a good time and no is by themselves. I think it's nice to sit by someone who doesn't really have anyone to talk too. So i can be there friend and make them feel better.
August: I am back at school. I am junior. I'm looking forward to hanging out with my friends and Special Olympics. I am going to play Unified Soccer and basketball. I like being in the Just Like You Club because we get to have fun, be with friends, and do cool stuff
September: School has been going for a month. We have fun in school, but we do work too. I like all my classes. But, my favorite class is Unified P.E. because I get to see all my friends. Unified soccer started. We won our first game! Next week I'm going to do the Roller Coaster Challenge at Six Flags Great America! I have to ride on a roller coaster about 28 times!! I am raising money for Special Olympics, so far I've raised $225, but my goal is $300. It's so much fun! I'm going with my teachers, Dore and BMac and my friends Maggie, Marc and Boaz.
October: Well the soccer season went great we got the bronze medal in Special Olympics Unified Soccer. The Just Like You Club went out for pizza then to a haunted hayride. Most of us got scared, especially from the headless horseman. I make my friends and teachers at school laugh. I like seeing my friends in unified p.e. This week Dore, Maya, and me are going to Washington DC for Special Olympics. I am going to give a presentation. We get to see famous things in Washington DC like the White House.
November: It's been a fun month! Maya, Dore, and I had a great time in Washington DC. I saw the Washington Monument. We had time to play games and hang out with friends, but also had work. Maya and I answered questions about having a Unified program at school. Last week I went to Kankakee with BMac, Dore, Boaz, Emma, Maddy, Marc, Maya, Anaya, Allison, and Sam. It was for the Special Olympics Youth Summit. I did a presentation about Unified. We ate a Steak and Shake. It was fun. Special Olympics basketball just started.
December: I would like to teach the new Ambassadors how to be more involved with Unified Champion Schools. They should try to be involved with Unified Sports. Also they can schedule time with your partners to to talk out ideas, and also be good listeners to their advice.
January 2020: My inclusion heros are my friends Maddy and Emma. They are my inclusion heros because when I first met them they helped me develop new soccer skills, and helped me get better at soccer. They also help me with work when I don't understand something. They inspired me to be my best self in 2020 by giving me advice. They have given me advice on how to stay focused and listen to others around me.
February 2020:
March: I was courageous during lunch for our respect week campaign. My friend Emma didn't want to go up to people by herself. I walked around with her and asked our classmates to come up to the table to sign our respect banner. I promoted inclusion by explaining what respect is and asking people to sign our banner.
April 2020: My favorite outside activites are the ones that I do at camp every year. We do boating, archery, and rock climbing. When I am not at camp I love to play soccer with Emma and Myah. I also love to play sports inside too! I play basketball and football in gym with Mr. Dore. My fitness goals are in softball and golf. My goal is to focus on the ball, and practicing hitting the ball.
May 2020: In our unified gym we promote inclusivity. I have a different partner each unit, so everyone can get to know each other. My favorite community that I am apart of is South Suburban Special Recreational Association (SSSRA). It is an organization that people can join to play sports, make new friends, and have fun!
June 2020: Since we have been on quarantine I have heard a lot about e-sports. That is something that I would like to try because I have never done it before. Playing the sports that I play right now with Special Olympics motivates me to try new sports.
July 2020: I can relate to Big Hero 6 because they include everyone in their team and they always work together. The team looked over each other and cared for one another, and that is what I try to be like. A unique quality about me is that I always try my best to be friends with everyone, and be nice to everyone I meet. I also include all my friends and make sure no one is ever left out.
August 2020: People with intellectual disabilities have fought for us to have so many things like unified sports, unified gym, and unified clubs. Because of their fighting, I have got to have many opportunities; one of my favorite things is being a Youth Ambassador. If it wasn't for all of the individuals with intellectual disabilities that came before me I wouldn't have met most of the friends that I have made.
