Looking back on unique soccer season Part 2 By Anika Arutla
Due to COVID-19, many seasons for various sports were cut short, including girls soccer. To commemorate its season, which was full of many ups and downs, here are some of the highlights from its District 6-6A season.
Coming fresh off of an undefeated preseason, the Cowgirls played Irving MacArthur on Jan. 24 in their first District 6-6A match. They ended the night with a 5-1 victory but with a cost. Coppell senior midfielder Montse Lomeli left the field with a red card, leaving the team without a key player for the next two matches. The match began slowly for Coppell with MacArthur scoring in the first few minutes. However, with a changed formation, the Cowgirls came back with five goals by Coppell junior forward Jojo Alonzo, Coppell senior defender Haley Roberson, junior midfielder Maya Ozymy and two by sophomore forward Michelle Pak.
In its second District 6-6A home match of the season, the Cowgirls took their first loss of the season on Feb. 4 to Flower Mound Marcus. During the last three minutes of the match, Marcus scored a goal taking the tied score to 3-2. Beginning the match on the wrong foot, the Cowgirls were down, 2-0, in the first half of the match. However, in the second half, Coppell took offensive control and tied the score, 2-2. Coppell sophomore Michelle Pak scored a goal with 34 minutes left in the match and senior forward Haley Roberson scored off of a cross. Following the equalized score, Marcus sophomore midfielder Ella Lockley was able to tap the ball, earning Marcus a win.
In the 21st minute of its third District 6-6A home match on Feb. 11, Coppell was down one against district leader Flower Mound, which resulted in a 1-0 loss. After letting go an early goal, the Cowgirls were not able to respond with goals. The offensive pressure of the match remained on the Cowgirls by Flower Mound senior midfielders Caitlin Matthews and Abby Smith.
“We should come together as a team and just reset and work for each other,” Coppell junior midfielder Maya Ozymy said. “Our biggest struggle right now is just energy on the field. If we can all just come together and find our common goal, we’ll be nothing but successful.”
Ending the night third place in District 6-6A, the Cowgirls were able to gain a 4-3 victory over Hebron on Feb. 25 in their fourth home match. In the first 25 minutes of the match, Coppell junior midfielder Ellie Stewart scored two goals. Although, Hebron quickly caught up, leaving a 2-2 score at halftime. In the second half of the match, Coppell junior forward Jocelyn Alonzo and senior defender Hayley Roberson were able to score two more goals, ending the night with a 6-2-1 record.
The Cowgirls were off to a great start within four minutes of the match when Coppell sophomore forward Michelle Pak scored the first goal of the night. The night ended with a 5-1 victory over Lewisville on Feb. 28 at Buddy Echols Field. The first half of the match ended with a 2-0 lead. The Cowgirls were able to keep control of the field in the second half, scoring three more goals. despite letting Lewisville score a goal.
During its last District 6-6A home match of the season due to COVID-19, the Cowgirls played Irving and left the field with a 10-0 victory on their shoulders. Coppell was able to get the ball into the net within the first minute of the match, leading the way for nine more. Throughout the first half, the Cowgirls dominated offensively while keeping the ball in Irving territory. When Irving began to push back, the Coppell defensive line stepped up. This match allowed the starting lineup to rest, with numerous substitutes throughout the night. The Cowgirls ended the season with a second tie.
The Cowgirls were able to play one more game against Flower Mound on March 9 at Neil E. Wilson Stadium in Flower Mound. The night ended with a 0-0 tie. That game was its last district match of the season due to COVID-19. The Cowgirls were scheduled to have senior night on March 17 against Irving Nimitz and finished the season 14-3-2 overall.
