Welcome To The Digital Timeline

The following project you are about to explore, will walk you through the creation, installation, maintenance, and alteration of the revered large three-story abstract mural in the National Art Centre (NAC). This timeline showcases the fascinating life of the painting “Homage to Robert F. Kennedy”, by Canadian Artist William Ronald. This piece was created specifically for the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and has been a staple in the building since the days the doors opened in 1969. Using a combination of web, documentary video, and augmented reality, this digital narrative highlights key aspects of the famous Canadian painting and its creator, William Ronald, through a captivating and multi-platform timeline.

What is it?

This Canadian art work is has a rich history, which made for an interesting narrative to compile and present using the various mediums. After looking through the documents preserved in the NAC Archives, our team discovered that the inspiration behind the painting itself was unknown, but the work’s life, from its conception to the unveiling and all the way to the cleaning/alterations, was completely laid out in a series of diverse documents. We decided to present the narrative using three different platforms to fully encapsulate all the available information of the piece.

What is There to Explore?

You will have the opportunity to navigate this digital timeline by using the following three mediums:

  • Video Documentaries: Each section of the timeline is divided into short, informational and engaging video clips. This medium will introduce each new timeline event as you scroll through the project.
  • Poster: Each video is then followed by the corresponding, vibrant and cleanly laid out visual representation of the section of the timeline. The component highlights the major details from each video.
  • Interactive Augmented Reality: Each section of the poster will have AR elements implemented into the design that can be accessed using Adobe Aero and your iPad or mobile device. The logo for Adobe Aero will appear over the posted to notify you when this feature is available.
