Grand Opening Ecu opens new health sciences student center

Last week, students and employees on East Carolina University’s health sciences campus celebrated the grand opening of the new student center located within walking distance of classes and offices. The new facility adds conveniences like a gym, dining options and several satellite offices for campus services and programs.

It is the first stand-alone student center on a medical campus in North Carolina and one of only a few in the United States.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the center was held on March 23.

The 75,000 square-feet, three-story state of the art facility cost $34 million.

Within the new 20,000 square-foot recreation center, there are two multi-purpose basketball courts.

“It’s amazing and so open and the people that work here are so welcoming. I’ll come here every day. As much as I can.”

-Sydney Garner, Class of 2018, College of Nursing

“I’m mainly excited about the weight room and all the exercise equipment and the cardio floor. And having some more food options. A lot of times I just come straight here. It’s nice to go ahead and park and then also be able to work out and then have some food before class is awesome, especially without having to go somewhere off campus.”

-Tim Woodward, Class of 2018, College of Nursing

A slide is a unique feature of the student center and takes visitors from the third floor to the second.

“The slide is super cool. I love all the machines because I’ve been working out at my apartment complex and so we only had a few. And definitely all the study space upstairs. It’s nice to get away from the dental school and have another place to go and study. I’ll probably come here daily; no, definitely daily!”

-Akeadra Bell, Class of 2020, School of Dental Medicine

Students are also able to take advantage of new study spaces.

There are multiple dining options at the new student center including: Grille Works, Starbucks, Greens To Go and a convenience store.

“This facility is where students and faculty get together outside of the classroom to do collaborative work. Our student centers are the first buildings prospective students visit and they make a lasting impression.”

-Dr. Virginia Hardy, ECU Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
