JAPANESE DAY Congratulations to our Japanese teacher, Showji Ito, for planning, coordinating and implementing a wonderful day of cultural experiences last week as all students took part in ‘Japanese Day’. The feedback from our students and staff was unanimously positive which is a credit to his organisational ability and drive. Thank you to his loyal band of helpers, and everyone in general for getting into the spirit of the day.
CHESS TOURNAMENT We hosted our second Chess Tournament for the year last Thursday and more than 150 students from 16 schools took part. We placed 5th overall, which was a side story to the main focus of the day which was to simply give students the opportunity to play a wonderful game in a structured environment and to develop their strategy skills and have fun!
SCHOOL DANCES Looking forward to three nights of fun and entertainment next week as our School Dances take place at La Trobe University Union Hall. I look forward to seeing you there.
OVAL PLANTING PROJECT Many thanks to the quiet achievers of Viewbank PS, the Buildings and Grounds Committee, who attended last Saturday and prepared the soil to enable us to plant more than 200 trees kindly donated by Banyule Council. The school community are now invited to come and join the Committee on Sunday 16th September for any length of time between 9.30 am and 12 noon to help complete the final site preparations and commence planting. We will be spending time at School Council tonight (Thursday) discussing ideas to improve and develop our oval even more over the next few years , as you will be aware from previous newsletters that this is our major fundraising goal over the next few years.
END OF TERM ARRANGEMENTS Hard to believe that I am writing about this, as the term has flown by so quickly! As is customary, at least at Viewbank, the final day of the term sees us conclude with an assembly commencing at 2.10pm in the Gymnasium with students dismissed for the Term 3 holidays by 2.30pm.
Have a great weekend.
Kind regards,
Bill Kersing
Principal
VIEWBANK MAKERSPACE Pick My Project – Community Support Needed
Preparing our students for the 21st century is critical and developing partnerships within our community is a positive step towards achieving this. Please show your support of the Viewbank College Makerspace initiative by visiting the Picking My Project website and voting for the Viewbank Makerspace.
Dear Viewbank Primary Community,
I have been working with Viewbank College on getting a grant for $120,000 from the Victorian government to go towards upgrading their STEM facilities with advance technologies to be state of the art. This grant would allow them to work with local schools like Viewbank Primary and other community groups to demonstrate what these new tools like 3D printing in advanced manufacturing and virtual reality can do and how they might shape jobs of the future. The project has already made it through the first stage, but now it needs to demonstrate community support to get approved. Our project needs your support so please help by registering and voting to support the project using the following two steps before it closes on the 17th of September.
- Go to the Pick My Project website and register to vote: https://pickmyproject.vic.gov.au/
- Search for the Viewbank Makerspace and vote for it as one of your favourite community projects
If the project gets enough community support, then perhaps we might see you or your children there once it is ready.
Thanks in advance for your support

FOOTY DAY AND SPECIAL PIE LUNCH We had a wonderful day today celebrating footy colours day and raising money for the Fight Cancer Foundation. Many students also enjoyed a yummy pie lunch. This is always a hugely popular fundraising lunch and our wonderful Parents and Friends helpers were busy all day warming pies and preparing the orders. We are so lucky to have such an enthusiastic and well-coordinated team of helpers. All money raised from the lunch orders will go towards our current fundraising projects. Thanks to our families for supporting the day and I hope everyone enjoyed their yummy lunch.

OVAL RE-VEGETATION PROJECT We are delighted to announce Banyule Council's Environmental Sustainability Education Office will provide our school with 200 local indigenous plants to help re-vegetate a section of our school oval bank. What a great opportunity to start rejuvenating our school oval. Thank you Banyule Council! Come and join us on Sunday 16th September for any length of time between 9.30 am and 12 noon to help complete the final site preparations and commence planting. Can't make it on the 16th September? Your family can also assist the Project by collecting much needed non-glossed newspapers to mulch the new plants. You can leave them in the collection box at the School Office until Friday 14th September. The thicker the layer of newspaper mulch the better - so let's see how many newspapers our school community can collect within a week!
Many thanks,
Buildings and Grounds Committee
