Note from our Head

Dear Oakfield families,

The school hall and corridors have been alive with the sound of music whether it is rehearsals for the carol service, practising for house singing or members of our school community just happily whistling a tune.

Music has an almost unassailable power to make one feel good whether you are the singer, instrumentalist or listener and is a truly fantastic way for the children to express their Creativity, Challenge themselves by trying new things and Collaborating with others. It is also highly evocative and is now a near essential part of getting into the festive spirit. Our Christmas music video is being filmed next week and will include staff and children doing their absolute musical best to live up to the fantastic original song Mr Howes has written especially for us.

Wishing you all wonderful weekends whether or not you are cracking out the Christmas songs already.

Year 2 Games on Thursday afternoon!

The Sports Department hope you enjoy this small glimpse of your children playing Sport and find it useful to understand what they do on a Thursday afternoon. We have been focusing on skills for mainly Football, Hockey and Netball this term with other fun, physical challenges for the children to attempt both individually and as a team. One of the classes, each week, is a 45-minute session of Gymnastics. In the Spring Term, we introduce the Year 2 children to the concept of House Sports Competitions and in the Summer Term they will have opportunities to do some Games lessons at the Rosendale Playing Fields along with a House Cross Country.

Henry's Match Report from Weekend Rugby

Thanks for your report Henry - more than a brilliant try!

YEAR 6

Drama

In Year 6 this week, children have been taking part in a variety of drama games involving teamwork. Here are some photos of a simple mirroring game.

The children began in pairs, then slowly built up into groups of 4, then 6, etc. Eventually we ended the lesson with the whole year group working together to mime a forces battle using earth, wind and fire.

Well done Year 6!

YEAR 5

Science

Science experiments continue to be a highlight of Year 5. We have learnt about Evolution and changes over time. The children engaged in different research and then showed their understanding in graphs and written form too.

YEAR 2

Ready and Action!

Year 2 have been in fine voice, practising songs and lines for their nativity.

They have been learning to project their voices and to use great expression.

The children cannot wait to peform!

In Religious Studies Year 2 listened to the story of Zacchaeus. They learnt that Jesus came to teach everybody to love one another and to be kind to one another. This way the world would become a better place. The children showed this by making a frozen picture.

YEAR 1

This week, the Year 1 children were learning how to draw different animals. They used step-by-step instructions to draw the shapes gradually and to create their own animal sketch. The children explored lines, patterns and shapes and learnt how to use sketching pencils to create different marks.

They really enjoyed watching videos and having a go at the cartoons on ‘Draw with Rob’ too: http://www.robbiddulph.com/draw-with-rob

UPPER FOUNDATION

St Stephen's Church Visit

What a wonderful morning at St Stephen's Church.

The children learnt about the font, the lectern, the tabernacle and the chalice. Some children were lucky enough to ring the bell, performing beautiful campanology. Whilst some spoke clearly at the altar on the microphone. It was a very interactive visit, where the children could connect what we had talked about in the classroom with first-hand experience. The stained glass windows were stunning and reflected the ones we made in class this week also.

Thank you to all the adults who helped support us too!

MATHS

MATHS WORD OF THE WEEK

Volume

Volume is the amount of space a 3D shape takes up.

A cubic cm block takes up 1 cubic cm. This is written as 1 cm³.

You can work out the volume of a shape by multiplying length x width x height.

If the shape is made of cubic cm blocks, you can count the cubes to find the shape's volume.

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs this week explored their sense of smell. We talked about winter scents and discussed the different spices the children knew and how they liked the smells. The children then closed their eyes and each Hedgehog was given a clove in their palm, they could only touch it and smell it to make out what it was. We then used the cloves and some tangerines to make lovely smelling winter decorations. They children absolutely loved this activity and cannot wait to place it on a special place at home to make the room smell wonderful.
