Hagwil yaan Student newsletter | October 2021

Welcome to the second issue of Volume 2: Hagwil yaan!

Welcome back to campus! As we transition, we are happy to introduce to you volume two of this student newsletter. As you have noticed, volume two has a new name: Hagwil yaan which means "walk softly, walk slowly".

In each issue, we focus on an Indigenous language in our region. This month, we are happy to feature the language of the Gitxsan.

It is already Lasa Sinlaaxw (October)! Lasa Sinlaaxw means the trout are hungry, taking to bait, easy fishing. The 'yans (leaves) are all changing to beautiful bright colors of hahlmasii (orange), lat'a k'almoos (yellow) and ihlee'etxw (red). We hope you are all doing well in your studies and you are able to keep up with your assignments. We understand it is a very busy time, so feel free to reach out to us if you need extra support.

Your success is our success! Reach out if you answer no to any of the questions.

Some classes are going to be face-to-face, so please do your part in keeping everyone safe by following guidelines to keep COVID-19 at bay. Masks are now required in all indoor public settings, including your classrooms and lab times.  Dim habin ts'agan ganthl ts'im aagan ahl maask. (Cover your nose and mouth with a mask). Dim suwil hetxw 'niin ahl hlagats'uudin. (Keep your distance from others.) Ha'wim ji t'ooyaxs ligi naa. (Don't shake hands with anybody). Dim saksinihl an'onin, yo'oxs'ontxw gant aks dim hooyin. (Wash your hands, use soap and water). Dim hlaa t'aa 'niin ji siipxwin. (Stay home if you are sick). ** Ayookhl Covid (laws of Covid) translations from Dr. Jane Smith's Gitxsanimx Parent Workbook for Families.

Feel free to reach out to us if you need any assistance, we are always here to hlimoomin (help you). We will do our best to support you in every step of your educational journey.

Enjoy, take care and stay safe!

Stories are in our Bones by Janine Windolph

Photo captured from National Film Board of Canada

In this layered short film made in 2019, filmmaker Janine Windolph takes her young sons fishing with their kokum (grandmother), a residential school survivor who retains a deep knowledge and memory of the land. The act of reconnecting with their homeland is a cultural and familial healing journey for the boys, who are growing up in the city. It’s also a powerful form of resistance for the women.

Available for free through the National Film Board of Canada website!

Mapping my way home : a Gitxsan history by Neil J. Sterritt

Photo captured from Northword

Today, it is one of the most picturesque communities in all of BC--a tiny, tourism mecca nestled quietly in Gitxsan territory at the foot of an iconic mountain and bordered by two nurturing rivers. But as recently as 140 years ago the adjacent villages of Hazelton and Gitanmaax were the economic hub of northern British Columbia. Packers, traders, explorers, miners, surveyors and hundreds of tons of freight passed through every year. From Port Essington on the coast east to the Omineca gold fields, from Quesnel north to Telegraph Creek, author Neil Sterritt tells how the trails and the cultures of the north converged where the Skeena meets the Bulkley. Mapping My Way Home: A Gitxsan History is also the story of a people, recorded in both the oral and written traditions, and their adaptation to ever-changing geographies, cultural imperialism and economic opportunity. And finally it is the author's story. Born and raised in two cultures, Sterritt shares his journey from the wooden sidewalks of 1940s Hazelton to the world of international mining and back again to the Gitxsan ancestral village of Temlaham where he helped his people fight for what had always been theirs.
