Tyler returns to dominance, wins 20th women's tennis title

Tyler (TX) earns its 20th NJCAA DI Women's Tennis Championship in program history, marking it's third title in the last four national championship tournaments. The Apaches claimed two doubles flight titles and three singles flight titles on their way to the championship.

Second-place finisher Hillsborough (FL) claimed three singles flight champions. Cowley (KS) earned a doubles flight championship and finished the tournament in third place overall.

Championship Results

The Apaches placed five individuals in the six singles flight championships while placing a pair in each of the three doubles final en route to claiming the 2021 NJCAA DI Women's Tennis Championship title.

Martins steals the show for Tyler

After earning a second place finish in 2019, Tyler came back into the women's tennis championship on a mission to return home with gold.

The Apaches were led by freshman Destinee Martins who competed in both the No. 1 flight in singles and doubles. Martins won the No. 1 singles title 6-4, 6-2 over Abraham Baldwin's Natalie Kohoutkova. Martins also played in the No. 1 doubles flight alongside Lauren Anzalotta which the duo won the title in a close 6-4, 6-3 match.

As a team, Tyler showed dominance across the board. Anzalotta won the No. 2 singles title and freshman Violet Apisha picked up the No. 3 singles title. The team of Apisha and Emelie Schwarte claimed the No. 2 doubles title.

Overall Team Standings

Tyler showed consistency across all events to capture the DI Women's Tennis National Championship at the Mesa Tennis Center in Mesa, AZ.
In his 11th season at the helm of the Apache's program, Tyler head coach Dash Connell was named the Coach of the Tournament.

Hillsborough claims second place

An all freshman Hawks team put together a strong 2021 season and capped it off with an impressive showing during the five-day national tournament. A national powerhouse in recent years, 2021 marked Hillsborough's tenth top-five finish since 2002.

The Hawks claimed title match wins in the No. 4, 5, and 6 singles flights while also earning a runner-up finish in flight No. 3. In the doubles events, Hillsborough earned two second-place finishes in the the No. 1 and 2 flights.

Isadora Oliveira held to lead the way for the Hawks, picking up the win in the No. 5 singles flight 6-2, 6-1. Alongside partner Magda Tuells, Oliveira finished as runner-up in the No. 2 doubles flight.

Cowley finishes third, claims one doubles flight title

The duo of Ane Ibarra and Andrea Rodriguez earned the No. 3 doubles title by a 7-6(5), 7-6(5) score for the Tigers. The win marked Cowley's first doubles flight title at the NJCAA national tournament since 2007. Freshman Saara Kunakunova finished in second-place in No. 4 singles.

The Apaches’ returned to national prominence as one of the most dominant NJCAA women's tennis programs. Tyler has placed inside the top three at the NJCAA women's tennis national tournament in all but one year since 1998 and now lead the association's record book with 20 team championships.
