The Exploration of Image Making Brooke Friend

The Exploration of Image Making is the imagination of original ideas. It is the power of self-determination—something we all desire but at times it can be challenging to control. Limitations often force a person to push boundaries to develop new solutions and go beyond the obvious. At its best, creative freedom forces us to conceive the unimaginable, but harnesses the creativity to form cohesion. Image making is something that takes practice and is very experimental, which is part of what makes it so enjoyable. Starting is always hard, but once you get into the process, it’s all worth it in the end. You learn a lot through the making process, whether it’s a new way to manipulate something or learning how to etch an image into glass. Experimentation is the key, and you want to exhaust all options so you know you did everything you could to push your art to its best.

As a designer I was forced to consider the user to create human centered solutions. But now, it is my turn to use my newly found knowledge. I have found this to be a daunting task so far, because I am a person who likes guidelines and rules to follow. The reason for this is that it makes it easier to complete the task at hand. Now however, I want to do the thing that scares me most, allows me to grow, and throws the rules away. I have chosen a project where I have the freedom to follow my passion, something with no right or wrong answers, or specific rules.

This project is a collection of ideas inspired by ten individual words. Each week for ten weeks, I study one word and attempt to interpret it through various studies in form. Sometimes it is a drawing, sometimes it’s a collage. This is an experiment with ideas and how I process them to formulate visuals that are either expressive, symbolic, or perhaps literal, like I did with vessel. I chose broad topics for my prompt, which gives me more freedom to experiment using collage, illustration, photography, painting, etc. This project has given me the opportunity to experiment and create interesting content that I haven't made before.

One of the techniques I used to generate ideas for some of the words was to brainstorm word lists. I then research the words from the list and look them up on the internet. The research I do mostly is image searching and finding visuals to inspire my image making. Then I start experimenting with different mediums and just make a variety of things that reinforce the meaning of each word. I choose my words through observation and being more aware. For example, with the word macro, I was using my macro lens one day and thought it could be interesting to use macro as a concept. I experimented with various ideas and came up with the idea of starting with something big (a sunflower and its leaf) and zooming in until you were at the nucleus of the leaf. No two processes are exactly the same because there’s a lot of experimenting, so I end up with something different every time. It is rewarding to see one idea evolve into a whole part of a project.

My work showcases the exploration of image making because it’s one of the things graphic designers must be good at, among other things. Image making is a fun process, but is intimidating at first, because there are so many choices. From my experience, you just have to narrow in on one process and see where it takes you. There are the traditional processes like painting and photography, but there’s also the use of materials like plexiglass, etching cream, digital illustration, photography, collage, etc.

There are several artists that I admire for their image making abilities such as: Mr. Brain wash, for his collages and street art, Samantha Dion Baker, for her drawing and ability to use different surfaces and mediums, as well as Van Gogh, for his impasto technique of painting. I encourage you to be inspired and see what you can create!

These are some studies I did this week to explore the different image making possibilities for this week's prompt (dream). Every week I will pick a new word and create that word using various mediums. This week's word was dream. I used imagery that I think represented dream the best. I cut out images from magazines, scanned them in as well as gathered photos from Unsplash. From there I arranged the pictures in compositions that I thought fit well.
These are some of the pictures I used to create my collaged images.
These are the collages I made this week. I realized I was being too literal with symbols and need to challenge myself to create imagery without so many obvious shapes and pictures related to the word of the week. I need to make sure the words I choose are not tangible things that are not as easy to create artwork from. Thinking abstractly and using experimentation will help me to create better content. I took the bigger collage out of the cloud from last week and expanded it. I am still working on some different types of collage for the word dream. So far I have the classic cut and paste collages, vector images mixed with collaged images and superimposed collages. I decided to research the 5 most common dreams to give myself more ideas to work with. They are dreams about being back in school, losing teeth, flying, falling and being chased. So far I've used flying and falling for inspiration for some of the collages. Resources for 5 most common dreams: https://sleep.ihg.com/snooze-culture/5-most-common-dreams-what-they-mean/

This week I focused on Dream a little more and started a new word (light). There are several different things I could do with light (they all include different types of photography), but I have to explore some things before I settle on which to do. I may only choose one direction, or combine a few different techniques. I was thinking of using blurred lights, silhouettes and/or interesting shadows. I feel that photography is a good way to show the word light. Photography relies on different types of light to create photographs, so what better way to express light than through photography?

These are some of the newer ideas I came up with for the word dream.
I'm still in the process of taking/finding photos of interesting shadows, but for now I have the orange shadow coming off of a jar on my windowsill. The other pictures are of blurred lights and silhouettes. I may leave them alone and not edit them, or maybe I will find a way to combine them? I have to experiment and see what happens.
Week 3's word is Macro. These are the ideas I was thinking of. I decided to go with a completely different idea, but based off of the leaf picture. The word macro basically means taking something small and putting it in a bigger perspective. I am going to do line drawings of the leaf from the photo and keep zooming in as much as I can. The idea behind this is to start with a sunflower and its leaves, then zoom in to just the leaf and keep getting closer and closer on the leaf. I will trace these images and together they will represent the word macro.
I decided to go with the blurred photos of light for the light prompt.

Dream collages revised

I was wondering if Aquarius is an air sign, why is the water bearer its symbol? So I googled it-

"Aquarius is an air sign because it deals with ideas, information, thinking. And with the sharing of ideas and information with others, with the "group". As for the water bearer, that represents, is a symbol for, the pouring out of knowledge and information to others. In ancient times, people met at the well. That's where information about the village, about life, etc., was shared. A cup, or a vessel is a container, holding something which is given out to others..." https://www.reddit.com/r/astrology/comments/awtojd/why_is_aquarius_the_water_bearer_an_air_sign/

I did some more work on week 3's word, macro. I found some pictures of sunflowers and close up photos of their leaves and outlined them. These are the process pictures for each part. It starts at the sunflower, then the leaf, and it keeps going closer and closer until we can see the cells that makeup the leaf.
These are the final drawings scanned in and vectorized.

I will be using the concept of the water bearer instead for Vessel. The water bearer's vessel symbolizes the "pouring out of knowledge and information to others. In ancient times, people met at the well. That's where information about the village, about life, etc., was shared. A cup, or a vessel is a container, holding something which is given out to others..." So I collected various bottles to represent the vessel the water bearer carries.

What I want the end product to look like
Some of the bottles I've collected.

I was given the idea to do messages in a bottle, instead of different conversation starters in one big bottle. I will look for small bottles on Amazon and then write things self care things to act on like: buy the person behind you coffee, go for a walk, have lunch with a friend, etc.

These are some of the messages I would put in the bottles. I could have people share the message they got and ask them to share themselves doing their activity and use a hashtag I create on my design Instagram account, so everyone can see what everyone else is up to.

For week 4's word, Vessel, I got small bottles to put the messages in and got some crates to put the bottles in.
Word list for week 6's word, sound. I changed my original idea for sound and decided to pick one of these words and use typography to illustrate it.
Experimentation with echo
Process photos for week 5's word, transparent. I took a picture of myself and turned it into a bitmap. I cut out the bitmap on my Cricut and used it as a template for the etching cream on the glass.
Process photos for part of week 4's word, vessel. I typed self care activities and rolled them up with washi tape to put in the bottle and given out at the senior show. This is a take away that goes with the bottles for week 4. Everyone who gets one will open the bottle when they go home or are out and post a picture of themselves doing their self-care activity and use #theexplorationofimagemaking to tag themselves on social media so we can all follow along. The bottle also serves as a diy project, because each one will come with a loop to screw into the cork and can be made into a necklace, keychain, mini terrarium, or whatever the person who owns it wants to do with it. They can also share what they create with it by using #theexplorationofimagemaking.

I ended up changing Macro a little bit. I took the original black and white shape, repeated it and gave them color and a background.
I also changed my idea for vessel. I will display some of the bottles still, but I wanted to find an abstract way to show them, so I was taking some photos of them using different angles and found that when I looked in the bottle with my camera , you could see unique patterns. Some bottles had more interesting patterns than others, so those are the ones I used. This is the pattern I liked the most.
Used watercolor and acrylic paint to make some patterns for sound. My reason for circles is to emulate the vibration and sound waves that sounds give off.
Ideas for energy. I wanted something abstract that could say energy but without being too obvious. My inspiration was this wood ring drawing on the right. I experimented with this pattern and used different colors and repetition to create the look I wanted.
Ideas for time. I wanted to do something with the sun, so I played with the color of the sun at different times of the day and also with simple shapes.

I took the best artworks from each word and put them in an 8.5x11 document box for viewers to look at. I then chose the best from these and made them the final pieces to put on the wall. I wanted to put them all up on the wall, but there were too many and I didn't want it to be overwhelming.
