The sweet spot MSU Dairy Store provides licks and laughs

According to Thrillists’ “The 31 Best Ice Cream Shops in America,” the Michigan State University Dairy Store has some of the best ice cream and cheeses in the state. Tucked away in Anthony Hall, it’s known for its tasty dairy products and long lines. This bridge between campus and the community brings those associated with MSU together for licks and laughs, even when school’s out for summer.

Despite living an hour away in Plymouth, Mich., Kristin Davies [left] and Elizabeth Zimmerman [right] say they love to visit to the MSU campus and indulge in the familiar flavors of the dairy shop. “We are Spartans,” Davies said. “We have memories from when we used to be in college here.” Since graduating in 2003 and 2005, both have continued to visit the campus in order to grab a scoop, now with children of their own. “The ice cream is just so good,” Zimmerman said

Tables through time

Working at a dairy store doesn’t always mean ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For MSU Dietetics student Bailey D’Haene [right], one major lifestyle choice stands between her and the sweet treat she serves. “I’m vegan so I don’t actually buy that much ice cream,” D’Haene said. However, she says she likes the cookie dough flavor. According to the staff, the bustling dairy shop on the MSU campus wouldn’t be complete without being jam-packed from the time they open to closing time. “We’ll usually have a line around the [back] hallway or all the way out the door,” supervisor and MSU student Sophia Mackoul [left] said. In addition to a variety of ice cream flavors, the shop also sells assorted cheeses. “Most of the time more ice cream is sold,” Mackoul said. “We sell it in gallons and half gallons, too.”
