The Cotswolds Exploring rural England on foot

We spent several days in the Cotswolds, using our lodging in Chipping Campden as a home base. In particular, we took time to hike in the area, using the public footpath system that's prevalent throughout rural England.

Early one morning, about 7 am, I started down the footpath that was just across the back alley of our hotel, The Lygon Arms. This footpath was an easy choice since it was so close and convenient. The footpath starts down a driveway...

The start of my morning walk

The first part of the footpath went through a sheep pasture. There are sheep throughout the Cotswolds and, indeed, everywhere in rural England.

Because the pasture was so close to the town of Chipping Campden, I could see the town church from the pasture.

This little stream ran through the pasture

The footpath led through a large field, bordered by Queen Anne's lace that was flowering profusely.

There was a gate in the path leading to - where? The view on the other side was hidden by shrubs.

The gate, close-up. Notice the public footpath sign on the right

And - the gate led into a large open field, filled with wild flowers

There were several other gates along the footpath, each one was a little different from the others.

Two sides of the same gate

I finished my walk in about an hour (just in time for the start of the hotel breakfast). This walk was exactly why I wanted to visit the Cotswolds. I wanted to spend time in the English countryside - to see the open areas and enjoy being out of towns and cities.
