IFSA BIG MOUNTAIN

2018 IFSA North American Junior Freeride Championships at Snowbird

  • Four SVSEF Big Mountain athletes qualified to compete at the IFSA North American Junior Freeride Championships at Snowbird: Paris Pratt, Joe Goitiandia, Hunter Diehl and Alex LaFleur. Alex declined, as he is completing his Community School senior project.
  • Receiving an invitation to this competition was an achievement in and of itself – 175 athletes were asked out of ~2500 athletes in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Snowbird received two feet of new snow on Friday, April 13. Athletes competed in an initial run – Joe finished 30th after his first run with 30.17 points; the winning run was 32.07, so the spread in the top 30 was really tight.
  • Paris Pratt was 14th after her first run for 15-18 year olds, with 15th as the cutoff for finals.
  • Hunter was 40th after his first run. “He had a hip check, but he bounced right up and skied the line he had picked out," explained Head Coach Conor Davis. "They were scoring any kind of bobble, hand down, or hip check really critically.”
  • Following the snow accumulation on Friday, it warmed up and turned the course to ice. The TD determined it unsafe for competition, and so the final runs for all three SVSEF athletes were cancelled. This meant that their final place was based solely on their first run – Paris was 14th overall, Joe 30th and Hunter 40th.

USASA Nationals, continued

  • A significant team result for SVSEF at USASA Nationals was the consistency across the board in halfpipe – SVSEF skiers won a gold medal in every halfpipe event they entered.
  • Day 4: Barrett Beyer and Walker Woodring took first and second in the Ruggies (7 and under) halfpipe event. Ridge Dirksmeier was eighth for the 14-15 age group in slopestyle, and Joey Markthaler was 10th. The 16-17 group also had a slopestyle event, in which Charley Bingham took fifth.
  • Overall results were based on combined performances from throughout the week. Ben Fethke finished second for Menehune (10-11) boys, Walker Woodring ended the week with the overall win for Ruggie boys, and Barrett Beyer finished second for Ruggie boys.
