Smoke Signals A way of communcation

Smoke signals is one of the oldest forms of communication. It's a form of visual communication over long distances.

In general smoke signals are used to transmit news, signal danger, or gather people to a common area.

But now it's an ART!

The method or art is called Cloud Chasing or Extreme Vaping

Cloud Chasing is a difficult skill to master, and has proven to be an upcoming competitive sport. Those who compete in cloud chasing utilise their e-cigarettes and lung capacity to produce fancy, decorative mind-boggling puffs.

The rules to the competitions are simple. Participants inhale and win competitions by blowing the densest and creative vapour cloud possible.

Some cloud-chasers known as 'professional vapers' take part in cloud-blowing contests called 'cloud competitions'.

Spectators are referred to as 'cloud gazers'

There are two major cloud competitions in the US which are; the International Cloud Championships in California, and the World Series of Vape, in Las Vegas

Since these are competitive, the prize money ranges between $250-$2,000. Some competitors gain sponsorship from e-cigarette companies.

So, on my stroll through Shoreditch trying to answer a very good brief about dark, light and time I ended up learning about the world of vapouring. I now have a fascination for the sport from a photography perspective and will look for opportunities to photograph the professionals of the sport.

Special thanks to Adobe for allowing me to take part in the first annual Photography Jam event in London 2016. Also a special thanks to the staff at Noble Vaping who modelled for me to produce these awesome shots.
