Ice melting experiment Shelby de lange

This Website is about The ice melting experiment Davos literacy group did and This is about the reaserch and experiments that we did.

Hypothesis: I know that salt melts ice, will different powders melt ice cubes faster than salt.I think that baking soda will melt it the fastest.

Materials:

Salt Baking soda

Citric acid Sand

Sugar 5 Container

Measuring cups/ spoons Stop watch

Flat surface Camera/phone

Variables:

Control: Amount of ice, Size of container, Amount of powder substance, Size of ice.

Independent:

The powder substance

Dependent:

The salt melts the ice fastests and the sugar is not far behind

Procedure:

Pour ½ a cup of water into all of the 5 bowls. Measure a ¼ cup of each powder substanceSprinkle all powder onto ice at the same time.Once you pour it on start the timer

Results/Observations:

The salt and sugar are making little holes everywhere which makes it melt faster. the salt- took 1 hour and 14 minutes.

Conclusion: When salt is added as the salt lowers the Temperature of the water, this is also known as freezing point depression. The more salt you add the lower the freezing point/temperature will go which will make it less likely for ice to stick to ground. The temperature has to be below 0* for the ice to really stick to the concrete. Usually when it is icey people sprinkle salt all over their concrete which will mean the concrete will not be slippery. It does help keep the concrete clear of ice but sometimes when the temperature is extremely low the salt doesn’t make much of a difference.
