Monticello MBK Community Local Action Summit --- APRIL 24th

Monti-MBK hosted a well attended Monticello My Brother's Keeper Local Action Summit on April 24th from 3:45pm-7:45pm in the Monticello High School Cafeteria.

So far, over 25 agencies from our local community, and hundreds of youth, parents, and school officials have provided us with valuable feedback for our MBK Community Action Plan.

Our MBK Local Action Plan will drive our efforts moving forward as a community to improve outcomes for boys and young men of color. The official launch of this plan will take place at our MBK Summer Kick Off BBQ on June 29th.

Special Thank you to New York State Education Department, and our keynote for this event, Dr. Don-Lee Applyrs, the NYSED Director of Family and Community Engagement. All of this work in our local community would not be possible without the unwavering advocacy and support at the state level thanks to Regent Young, Dr. Alston, Regent Finn (aka Judge Finn from Monticello) and so many other NYSED and Board of Regent supporters that give us the platform to do this very important work right here in Monticello.

We also owe a special thank you to our leadership in Central Office, Superintendent Tammy Mangus and our Executive Director of Special, Summer, & After School Programs, Dana Taylor, who are truly leading the way for MBK in MCSD and many other programs and initiatives that support equity and opportunities for ALL students!

UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY

Monti-MBK has partnered with the Sullivan County Human Rights Commission to facilitate "Unity in the Community" gatherings (aka Cop Cafe) the last Thursday of every month at 4:30pm, located at the Savory Sweets Eatery in Monticello. Our last meeting on May 30th featured special guests from the Sullivan County Juvenile Probation Department! The prior meeting on April 25th featured our NY State Police!

The purpose of these meetings are to promote unity and trust between our community and law enforcement officials from the criminal justice system. We recognize that there is a need for us to understand each other. These gatherings are intended for all of us to engage in meaningful dialogue, to share perspectives, and grow closer to one another.

Each gathering is hosted by a local business owner, Savory Sweets Eatery, located on 452 Broadway, Monticello, NY, who offers free snacks and refreshments for our community to enjoy. Each event runs from 4:30pm-5:30pm during the last Thursday of every month.

This month, we will be postponing our traditional meetings in exchange for a Police vs. Civilian Basketball Tournament during our MBK Summer Kick Off BBQ on June 29th at 5pm in De Hoyos Park. We will resume our normal schedule in July.

Big thank you to the Sullivan County Probation Department, the NYS Police, The Monticello Village Police, and the Sullivan County District Attorney for showing love to our community. Thanks to their support for our youth and community, we have been engaging in meaningful ‪dialogue‬ and discussing a lot of deep issues; all while bonding, laughing, and uniting as a community!
