Jerry's Journey Engl 102, Spring 2019

This is not a travel documentarY, but it is about a trip through learning.

My itinerary included several destinations:

  • Rhetorical Awareness
  • Critical Thinking and Composing
  • Conventions
  • Reflection and Revision

Rhetorical awarenEss

Knowing the details about travel destinations influences everything about a trip: how long to stay, whether to bring warm or cold weather clothing, are there passport requirements, money or language barriers?
Deciding what to communicate influences everything about writing: what is the purpose, who is the audience, what media will be used, what are the conventions to follow?

DD3HW3: Examining Sample Annotated Bibliographies

I practiced understanding rhetorical contexts: identifying the author, audience, topic and purpose of each bibliography.

Final Project #2: Digital Poster

My AI digital poster title page

Armed with new rhetorical awareness, I distilled a claim and supporting references into a digital poster using Adobe Spark. I explored AI and big data ethics, focusing on bias in algorithms.

Critical Thinking and Composing

Packing for travel is one of the quintessential critical thinking and composing exercises. I struggle over what to bring and what to leave behind. As so with writing, considering what an author says -- or doesn’t say.

DD2HW1 Research and Rhetoric

I discovered:

  • Rhetoric influences.
  • Research should be thorough and compelling.
  • Improving rhetoric and research yields improved writing.

DD6HW2 Brief Rhetorical Analysis

On reflection, I’m too wordy. Note to self: embrace brevity.

conventions

Experience shows us that there is a time and place for everything. Wearing jeans and socks to the beach is a fashion faux pas. In some places you can ride a scooter without a helmet. It's entirely inappropriate to take a dip in the pool outside the Taj Mahal. Paying heed to local laws and social norms mimics observing writing conventions -- give the audience what they expect, where they expect it.
Three photos. One showing sunbathers on a beach, appropriately attired. Next, a group of people with scooters on a city street, none wearing a helmet. Last, a woman facing toward the pool outside the Taj Mahal, one arm stretched skyward.

DD12HW3 Final Project #1 Annotated Bibliography

Completing my annotated bibliography, I applied the conventions of APA style: citation practices, structure and style.

DD18HW1 Final Project #2 Digital Poster

This was a particularly fun project for me because of the creativity afforded in the prompt and conventions. From advertisements to infographics and web pages, modern communication incorporates multiple formats, fonts, colors, and design styles.

Reflection and revision

Like travel photos reflect moments and memories, this portfolio reflects my journey through English 102. Looking back offers opportunities to plan for next time - trying something new or revisiting a favorite.

DD1HW3 Time and Plans Reflection,

I contemplated time constraints and requirements to perform well in this course. I considered time planning and procrastination avoidance strategies. I wondered how much my career might conflict with studying and homework.

DD11HW2 Peer Review of Full Project #1 in Google Docs

I carefully considered the work of my peers and offered constructive feedback. I received feedback on my writing from classmates and my instructor and used their input to revise my work.

My collected works demonstrate successful completion of the course learning objectives and goals. I considerably improved my reading and writing skills. As my English 102 travels conclude, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and thought for improvement.

  • I consider texts with greater scrutiny.
  • I research thoroughly and across domains.
  • I follow appropriate writing conventions.
  • I draft early, making time for revision and reflection.

My writing often lacked conciseness; I plan to attempt brevity going forward. I will apply my learning achievements from this short trip to the quest for my degree and my professional expeditions.
