2017 PROGRESS

The annual HERD Summary is managed and published by the NSF and includes research sponsored by federal agencies, state and local governments, industry and non-governmental organizations, as well as research activities funded by universities themselves. The NSF’s most recent survey covers FY 2017. ECU recently submitted its FY 2018 totals for the 2019 summary.

+4: ECU moved up in the national rankings from 247 to 243 in FY 2017.

IN FISCAL YEAR 2018 ECU RESEARCH IS BREAKING RECORDS

3.3% INCREASE: ECU reversed a multi-year trend of decreasing research activity and declines in national rankings.

While it will take one year until the NSF publishes FY 2018 research expenditure results for every university and college conducting research, we are excited to share some of the highlights ECU reported from this past year.

The positive impacts for the people, communities and businesses in eastern North Carolina resulting from research being done by ECU faculty and students.

FACULTY AND STUDENTS

ECU is promoting the growth and success of student research activities at all of our campuses. Pictured above celebrating biology student researcher and cross country runner Julia Brown (center right) are Vice Chancellor Dr. Jay Golden (from left), Brown’s research partner Matthew Chilton, and Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Director Curt Kraft.

Research Around Campus

As ECU continues to promote research opportunities around campus, the university has committed to doubling undergraduate research efforts over the next five years. As part of this mission, REDE is publicizing research across campus like never before! Starting this spring, our students, faculty and staff will see more researchers thanks to our research banners and transit advertising across campus. The campaign highlights research and creative activities from traditional bench science research to the creative arts, connecting students with others like them who’ve taken part in research activities. Be on the lookout for your researchers all across campus!

Students Recognized by GlaxoSmithKline Foundation

A pair of ECU undergraduates received 2018 Glaxo Women in Science scholarships presented by the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation's Women in Science Scholars Program. Sophomore Jamie Chamberlin and senior Ashley Lynn received the honor which, along with a monetary award, allows the pair to connect with female professionals in scientific fields and receive one-on-one mentorship opportunities.

Federal Government Shutdown

As of Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, the federal government is still in partial shut-down. Due to a lapse in appropriations, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Food & Drug Administration (FDA) most of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and many other agencies are closed. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and, the Department of Energy (DOE) are operating as lawmakers had previously approved funding for both until 30 September, the end of the 2019 budget cycle.

NSF and most other agencies will continue to accept proposals in accordance with published deadlines. REDE will continue to monitor for changes to agency operating status, and, if necessary, general instructions for awardees. Please contact Julie Cole, Director of Research Administration at COLEJU17@ECU.EDU with any questions.

Faculty Funding Opportunity

REDE is accepting applications for its 2019-20 Faculty Reassignment Awards in the Arts and Humanities. Sponsored and administered by REDE, in partnership with the Academic Affairs and Health Sciences Divisions, faculty reassignment awards provide funds to departments to reassign faculty effort during the academic year, providing dedicated time to apply for extramural funding in support of research and creative activities. Applications are due March 4. Learn more and apply for an award online.

ECU Announces New Sponsored Projects Administration System

After an extensive evaluation of options, ECU has contracted with InfoEd Global® for a new electronic research administration system that will replace RAMSeS in 2019. ECU’s new system, eTRACS, will initially include the following modules:

• Proposal Development (PD) which supports complete in-system proposal and budget development and system-to-system (S2S) proposal submission directly to federal agencies through grants.gov;

• Proposal Tracking and Award Tracking (PT and AT) which will replace current RAMSeS functions, automate current paper processes, and add additional workflow monitoring and reporting capability; and

• Financial Tracking (FT) which will support more efficient award set-up and provide a soft encumbrance system to help Principal Investigators more easily track financial commitments.

eTRACS will interface with Banner HR to auto-populate personnel data fields in proposals and budgets, with Banner Financial for award set-up and financial commitment tracking, and with ODS to allow greater reporting capabilities across platforms. The target go-live date for the PD, PT, and AT modules is July 1, 2019. Go-live for FT is expected in January 2020. For current information about the new system and implementation progress, visit the eTRACS website.
