Kudzai Chimbaira (1985 - 2018)

“Women taking part in film is a democratic issue, it is about balancing the narrative that has to be predominantly male as well as about balancing perspective and owning the narrative” - Kudzai Chimbaira at the African Women Filmmakers' Hub (AWFH) Inaugural Meeting at IIFF 2016 in Harare.

Kudzai was born in Zimbabwe in 1985. She studied Theatre with a minor in Film with Theory X Media in Harare, Zimbabwe and her first experience in film acting was via Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe where she acted in a short film production called “Pamvura” in 2005. The film was nominated for best short film at the Pan-African Film Festival Los Angeles 2006.

Kudzai went on to be involved in many film and theatre productions, including “Zimbabwe” (2008). She won numerous awards which include Best Actress for Zimbabwe International Film Festival (ZIFF) 2007 - for her role in 'The Return',

Best Theatre Actress for NAMA (National Arts Merit Awards) 2008 for her Role in theatrical performance in 'Anatol' and Best Actress for Carthage Film Festival 2008 in Tunisia - or her lead role in the feature film “Zimbabwe”

She directed a play entitled 'Silent Words' for Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) 2008 before relocating to Sweden, where she lived and worked as a film and theatre actress, theatre director and cultural project manager. She founded Integrationsteatern theatre company in Stockholm.

Kudzai is the former CinemAfrica Film Festival Sweden festival programmer. She served as a jury member of the 2013 United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Plural Plus Youth Video Festival on Migration, Diversity and Social Inclusion. In 2016, she was Jury President at the International Images Film Festival for Women (IIFF)
Kudzai will be remembered for her charismatic personality, her smile, energy, humility and wisdom. Her contribution to Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe has been immense and we will forever cherish having had her in our midst.
