Each year, the Office of Undergraduate Studies recognizes two faculty members for excellence in teaching: one faculty member teaching in an Undergraduate Studies Program, and one faculty member teaching in a General Education Program.
To chose the recipients, we ask UMD undergraduates: Has a faculty member been a mentor or role model for you?
Changed or reinforced your career direction?
Improved your understanding of challenging material?
Made a difference in how you view the world?
This year's recipient of the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in the Office of Undergraduate Studies Programs is...
"Even before I attended a class with her, Jessica introduced me to a breadth of new and thought-provoking ideas, causing me to reconsider my world views. She has a strong background in Black rhetoric and archives and has not hesitated to share her knowledge/perspectives with me."
"Jessica is always open and receptive to listening to her students. She regularly invites her students to come chat about classes, their careers, and even about the things going wrong in everyday life. She is supportive and funnels this passion into robust community-building events, enabling all students the opportunity to connect and bond."
"Through her understanding nature and compassion, she’s taught all of us that our experiences matter and that we can all give ourselves and each other more grace."
This year's recipient for the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in General Education is...
"Mike is the most enthusiastic teacher I have ever had. He is able to convey complex material in a fun and engaging manner, which was awesome for an introductory engineering course to get students excited about the field."
"Thank you for making class fun while at the same time successfully teaching us the material I needed to know. I did not expect to use it later on in life but I often use the skills I learned in that class."
"Mike led with a positive attitude, and encouraged us to learn from our mistakes and keep trying until we found a solution. He was very approachable, and went above and beyond to ensure every student understood the material by teaching us that it was alright to ask for help."
About the Awards
Based on undergraduate student nominations, the awards are named in honor of Donna B. Hamilton, former Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean for Undergraduate Studies.
The two recognized faculty will receive $1,000 cash awards. The awards ceremony can not be held this year.
