I don’t think I’d thought much about Gibraltar before we got here. A mix of British and Spanish, red post boxes and monkeys. It’s all true but there is so much more. We anchored outside La Linea. It looked rough but it was chop rather than swell so we had a good night. Next day, a hunt through the town to find the cable car and a walk in the nature reserve. What a delight. The highlight for me was St Michael’s cave which is the most amazing cavern of stalagmites and stalactites which goes on for ever. It’s all been very well done with walkways, passages and lighting to show the rock formations at their best. It’s also a place where they have concerts. The next one is on 3rd September if anyone is in the area. We will make a date to see one in future.
Next, the Windsor suspension bridge which is on the front page of the brochure so a photographer’s dream. It’s not for people with a serious concern about heights but for those of us with slight trepidation it’s fine. Pretty solid.
And then there are the tunnels. 34 miles, yes miles! of tunnels constructed over centuries to protect against a variety of sieges and potential wars. The most famous are the WW2 tunnels but for me the older siege tunnels are worth a look too. The conditions the soldiers were working on to build these, and fire cannons, are breathtaking and again, the exhibition is well put together. Not crowded even in August.
