“We had to break the new garage down so that it would not look like one massive, intimidating structure on Sunset Avenue. We used precast for all it was worth and in so many different ways on this project, including as backup material for limestone. It helped us build very economically and on schedule while also achieving the aesthetics we needed to blend this garage into the campus fabric.”
Randy Schumacher, Lead Designer - CSO Architects
This six-story multi-use parking garage features an architectural precast façade with four different finishes. The combination of panels embedded with thin brick, simulated faux-brick panels, spandrels with a simulated limestone finish, and flat panels with limestone handset in the field, blend handsomely with nearby limestone-clad buildings and the brick-clad Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Featuring gabled limestone tower elements, 1,038 parking spaces and 15,000 square feet of ground-level retail and restaurants, the parking structure offers amenities to the university and surrounding neighborhoods. Producing the precast offsite, just-in-time delivery and all-weather installation facilitated the fast-track construction schedule despite an unusually cold winter. Additionally, the garage’s precast concrete panels meet the seismic design requirements with specially designed connections from the architectural precast to the structure.
