The Principal's PEN Parent edition 8.1

Welcome Back to The Principal's Pen! Spring is here!!!
1st Annual DUNBAR DASH

THE DUNBAR DASH

Hello Poet Parents,

You may have heard that our PTO has been hard at work planning a very FUN color RUN. It's set for April 26, and we're hoping that in addition to having fun, students and their families will help fundraise to be eligible to win great prizes and support our initiatives to "Raise the Bar."

A link to register to run and begin fundraising is included in the accompanying flyer. If you do not have computer access, there are printed packages in the main office.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, reach out to PTO president Jessie Thompson, jmthompson5@gmail.com

Thanks so much!!!

As one of my favorite administrators says, "Go Poets" ....

From Mr. Hamlett

Good afternoon Parents/ Guardians

Mr. Hamlett here from the Guidance department and I hope everyone is doing well. A couple of weeks ago, the guidance department sent a letter home with our rising 8th graders making them aware that French 1 would no longer be offered at the middle school but, students who would like to take it may do so at E.C. Glass High school in the mornings. In addition to this, we have been made aware that Latin 1 would also be offered in the same way. Again, logistics are being worked out and when we have more information we will send it out. If you believe your child would like to take one of these foreign languages, please contact me by email at hamlettle@lcsedu.net or by phone at (434) 515-5310.

On Tuesday, April 9, our 7th grade students will attend a Regional Career EXPO at Liberty University to expose them to a number of local businesses. Students will speak with more than 40 companies to help with their career planning, which goes along with a state-mandated Academic and Career Plan. We sent home information week with students last week.

PTO Meetings are open to ALL! Did you know that all parents/guardians of DMS students are welcome at our PTO meetings? We would love to see you at our next meeting on Monday, April 8 at 6:00 PM in the library. Attending a meeting is a great way to learn more about our school! Consider attending our meetings or getting more involved if your time permits. This is good time to see if you want to get more involved with us for next school year too!

Field Trips

7th grade field trip to the Virginia Holocaust Museum and Maymont Park

The 7th grade field trip to the Virginia Holocaust Museum and Maymont Park in Richmond will take place on April 12th. The museum is based on the Ipson Family saga, as this family escaped a Nazi ghetto in Poland and made their way to America. Students will follow the timeline of events and get to witness more than 300 artifacts as they attempt to understand the Holocaust. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the museum's 6 Million Penny Campaign, where they will collect one penny for every Jew killed during the Holocaust. Students will also get a first-hand glimpse of what life was like in the Gilded Era by viewing the Dooley Mansion and grounds at Maymont Park. Completed in 1893, the mansion's grounds include an Italian Garden, Japanese Garden, arboretum, zoo, petting zoo, and more.

8th Grade Trip to D.C.

The 8th grade field trip to Washington, D.C., will be held on May 29th. This is the last Wednesday of school. Details will be coming home with students later in April!

On April 29, the 8th Annual German Essay Contest award winners will be announced at a special ceremony at E.C. Glass High School. Each year, Dunbar's German 1 students compete against high school German 1 students in an essay contest. Essays are read by a former Sweet Briar College German professor, who judges them on sentence content, grammar, and vocabulary. In the past years, Dunbar eighth graders have consistently taken first and second places in the contest. Good luck to all our German 1 students.

THANKS BANKER STEEL

Thank you Banker Steel Company for donating $20,000 to help us introduce the field of ENGINEERING to our middle school students! There is no way we could RAISE THE BAR without amazing community partners like Banker Steel! ⚙️

Using the skills they will learn in this class, our students have been challenged to design and build (or 3D PRINT) therapeutic toys for young children with Cerebral Palsy.

Spring Dance

Our last school dance was Friday 4/5/2019 3:05-4:30.

Interim Reports will be sent 4/10.

Encourage our teachers- Only TWO staff members have been recognized by parents this year . . . We know our teachers and staff members work very hard and need a pat on the back every now and then. If you would like to recognize a staff member for going above and beyond, you can click here to submit a positive referral using our Google Form, or email me with your nominations at browndr@lcsedu.net . (Our teachers appreciate this more than you know!)

Principal's Challenge

Our Principal's Challenges have been going great! These challenges are simple and quick acts of kindness and respect towards peers and staff. Students will NOT receive any reward or special acknowledgement for completing these challenges. It's just our way of giving them the opportunity to "Raise the BAR!" Please help us out with this by asking your child what the challenge for the week is and how they are completing it. Next week's challenge is: "Take a tech break before spring break. Don't use social media at all this week, and use the extra time to focus on schoolwork or serving others at school or home."

Final Thoughts: Great leaders, educators, and parents realize that there is no finish line... that is why we must keep Raising the BAR!
