School Year Ends with Tradition and Spirit

From car parades and graduation ceremonies, to Senior Field Day at the high school, PACE performances, and concerts across all six schools (including some outdoors), the 2021-2022 school year ends with tradition and spirit! Next Up: Mamaroneck High School graduation Wednesday evening, June 23 - Check the District facebook page the following day for photos.

Above: Mamaroneck High School celebrated its Class of 2021 with eight car parades through Larchmont & Mamaroneck. MHS students traveled past their former elementary schools and were greeted by students and former teachers. See more photos HERE.
This month was full with music concerts across the District and PACE Shows at the high school.
For the first time in memorable history, the Hommocks Middle School graduation was held outside. See additional photos and video HERE.
Above: Mamaroneck High School seniors participate in Senior Field Day at Harbor Island. This year, the Physical Education Department and several senior teachers took "Senior Day" to a whole new level. Color War, a two-day event, involved four student and two teacher captains per team with students participating in athletic and non-athletic events, including capture the flag, tug of war, kickball, kayaking, meditation, and art projects. Best of all, the new NYS policy of outdoor maskless activities had just been enacted, enabling seniors to bond together without any COVID-19 restrictions. A huge thank you to Danielle Malizia, Erin Byron, and Evan Madin from MHS for creating the event and to the PE Department at MHS and all teacher chaperones. Congratulations to the Blue team for pulling out the win. Who will get the trophy next year? More photos HERE

5th Grader Composes 'Ocean Waves' Performed by MAS and MHS Students

Check out this year-end piece composed by Mamaroneck Ave. School 5th grader, Nobel Weaver, and performed by MAS and MHS students. This was a collaboration between MAS Orchestra Director, Dr. Katherine Sinsabaugh and MHS Orchestra Director, Elyse Gellert. What a special treat!

Hommocks Holds Virtual Pride Month Assembly on Being an Ally and Kind to All Peers

The Hommocks Commons this year was transformed into an information hub, providing students and staff with nuggets of information celebrating differences (including racial, ethnic, gender, romantic interests, religious, and age). In June, emphasis was placed on educating students about how they can be an ally of their LGBTQIA+ peers and what the terms of the acronym mean. On the four pillars that frame the Commons, icons and historical figures of the LGBTQIA+ community were highlighted, with announcements each Tuesday providing historical content. Diversity Leaders met and examined the history and journey for equal rights in the community, and Hommocks Director of Student Life Keila Reyes delivered a virtual Safe Spaces assembly -- supported by social studies teachers -- enabling students to learn about the experiences of other groups and share their stories. The assembly concluded with a reflection on what it means to have an inclusive and safe school, along with a Kindness Pledge.

Mamaroneck Scholars Program Holds Special Event Honoring First Generation College Students

College-bound MHS seniors who participated in the Mamaroneck Scholars program - receiving extra support, information and resources weekly as they navigated the process of considering and then applying and selecting colleges - gathered for a special celebration of their achievements. We will miss our Scholars and wish them the best of luck.

Mamaroneck Scholars students (seniors) - mostly all of whom are first generation college students - joined together for a culminating celebration. We are so very proud of each of these students.

Civil Rights Story Author Visits Elementary Students and Conducts "If I Could Change the World" Art Project

Author and former MUFSD parent Amy Nathan visited Chatsworth Ave. School to read to students her book A Ride to Remember and conduct the accompanying "If I Could Change the World" art project. The story is told through the eyes of Sharon Langley, the first African American child to go on a ride at Baltimore’s Gwynn Oak Amusement Park on its first day without segregation (August 28, 1963), taking a spin on the carousel with her father by her side, and presents carousels as a metaphor for equality and fair treatment. “No matter their color, a carousel’s horses all go at the same speed as they circle round and round. They start together. They finish together, too. Nobody is first and nobody is last. Everyone is equal when you ride a carousel.”

Elementary school students enjoyed a reading by the author of A Ride to Remember and accompanying "If I could Change the World" art project.
