2010 BOWERMAN AWARD WINNER

Queen Harrison-Claye

Wrapping up a stellar collegiate career in 2010, Queen Harrison won three NCAA titles as a senior, becoming Virginia Techโ€™s first female national champion in any sport. She brought home a title in the 60-meter hurdles during the indoor season, and she became the first athlete in NCAA history to win both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. During her time at Virginia Tech, Harrison was a six-time All-American, ACC Female Track Performer of the Year in 2009 and 2010, and the winner of the 2010 Bowerman Award, given to the seasonโ€™s most outstanding male and female track and field athletes.

HOME OF ALL-AMERICANS

The Virginia Tech track and field programs have been on the rise since Dave Cianelli, the director of track and field and cross country, took control of the program in 2001. During his time at the helm, Cianelli has seen 101 student-athletes earn All-America status for a total of 275 All-America honors.

DISTANCE COACH ERIC JOHANNIGMEIER

  • Has coached seven All-Americans since taking over the job as the distance coach
  • Coached Peter Seufer to three ACC titles over the past two seasons
  • Has coached 20 All-ACC runners in track over the past two seasons
  • Was an assistant when the DMR team of Vince Ciattei, Greg Chiles, Patrick Joseph and Neil Gourley won the national title

THROWS COACH ANDREW DUBS

  • Is one of three coaches to have two women throw more than 65 meters in hammer throw during the same season
  • Coached Essence Henderson to a three-foot personal best to win a silver medal in the shot put at the 2020 ACC Indoor Championships
  • Coached Isaiah Rogers to silver medals in the shot put and weight throw, as he was named 2019 ACC Indoor Men's Field MVP and helped the men's team claim a team title
  • Coached Marak Barta (discus) and Emma Thor (hammer throw) to ACC titles at the 2018 ACC Outdoor Championships
  • Has coached 10 All-ACC throwers since taking over the job in 2018

POLE VAULT COACH BOB PHILLIPS

  • Enters his 37th year as the pole vault coach
  • Has coached 18 All-Americans during his coaching career

  • Coached Torben Laidig and Deakin Volz each to seven All-America performances

JUMPS/MULTI-EVENTS COACH PAUL ZALEWSKI

  • Is responsible for the development of Eszter Bajnok, who is one of the premier jumpers in the country
  • Helped Bajnok become the first jumper in program history to make NCAA Outdoor Championships in two events (long and triple jump)
  • Coached Jaelyn Demory to the first Tech men's ACC champion in the decathlon in school history
  • Has coached two All-Americans

STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES

RECTOR FIELD HOUSE

Thanks to an $18 million expansion in 2018, Record Field House has continued to be one nation's finest facilities. With the addition of the new north wing, Rector saw increased storage for track along with other further enhancements such as a new roof, new lighting and a new surface for the track. Altogether, the enhancements to Rector added approximately 32,000 square feet to the structure. There have been several areas of improvement, including a noticeable one with the addition of an indoor throws area. The addition includes two throws areas (weight throw and shot put) and connects to the main area. It is used for both practices and competitions.

W.A. & MAE STREET OLYMPIC SPORTS TRAINING CENTER

Virginia Tech track and field student-athletes train in the 6,000-square foot Street Olympic Sports Training Center. The two-tiered facility includes a lower level dedicated to strength training and a unique 1,800-square foot mezzanine level dedicated to functional movement, which helps prevent injuries.

STUDENT-ATHLETE PERFORMANCE CENTER

A $20 million Student-Athlete Performance Center, finished in 2020 and built on the top floor of Jamerson Athletics Center, enables student-athletes to grab snacks or meals, or to eat meals from a full-service kitchen. An expanding dining area overlooks the Steve Johnson Football Practice Fields and Lane Stadium.

CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION DISTRICT RESIDENCE HALL

Slated to be finished in the summer of 2021, this $105 million state-of-the-art residence hall will be home to nearly 600 students and176 student-athletes. With its open, airy design, the residence hall will have rooms similar to one-bedroom apartments, and it will also feature academic, research and collaboration space. In addition, it will cater to those interested in design, technology, visual and performing arts, and entrepreneurship.

SPORTS NUTRITION

Virginia Techโ€™s rapidly expanding sports nutrition staff consists of three full-time members, two graduate assistants, a consultant, and numerous student volunteers โ€“ all of whom dedicate themselves to staying on the cutting edge of nutritional research and science. The staff takes an individual approach to sports nutrition, meeting with individual athletes to educate, prepare โ€“ and help athletes reach peak performance in the respective sports.

STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT

The Office of Student-Athlete Development focuses on leadership development, community outreach, and preparing Virginia Tech student-athletes for careers outside of sports. This includes taking athletes to leadership seminars, enhancing student-athletes' networking and professional skills, connecting student-athletes with potential employers, and scheduling student-athletes to participate in service events within the community. The full-time staff of four has received national acclaim for its holistic approach to helping student-athletes.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ACADEMIC SERVICES SUPPORTS

Virginia Techโ€™s athletes have plenty of resources available to them as they pursue their academic endeavors thanks to the staff within the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services office (SAASS). A staff of 14 full-time people are devoted to helping athletes graduate with the degree of their choosing. The staff provides tutoring services, holds study halls, makes sure athletes enroll in proper classes, and works with professors across campus to ensure athletes are on track academically.
